My 1998 Nissan frontier never goes into overdrive unless it is in park. I drive a mountain hill everyday and need to be able to disengage the overdrive. When I put it in park with the overdrive button out the light come on the dash saying overdrive off but once you drop it into any gear light goes out and it stays in over drive even tho the button on shifter is still out. 2wd 4cyl model

SOURCE: gear shift

Do you hear a clicking sound coming from the shifter area everytime you hit the brake pedal, while the vehicle is is "P" park position?? There should be a clicking sound right by the shifter. That's the shifter lock solenoid. If that's not clicking you will not get the car out of park. Let me know what you found.

Well since the lights are controlled by the OBD (on board diagnostics), you'll have to reset it. You may be able to do this by simply disconnecting the battery for a few hours. However, a lot of newer vehicles have electronically locked radios which require the manual to be able to be re-enabled.

I'd check out the radio before disconnecting the battery.

The only other ways are to physically disconnect the lights in the dash or get someone with an OBD reader to clear the codes.

Did you or replace the throw out bearing ? Or the clutch has to be adjusted. does it have a hydraulic clutch ? These have to be bleeded like the master cylinder of the brake sytem.

SOURCE: 1999 nissan frontier overdrive problem

juan: there is a cable which comes from the transmission to the throttle linkage. This is called the TV (throttle valve) cable. This is designed to work in conjunction with the position of the throttle. I'm sure you heard the term "KICK DOWN SWITCH". Well this essentially is doing the same thing. If the cable is out of adjustment, it will have a tendency to want to downshift into 3rd.
Even though overdrive is electrically actuated, it can be disengaged by the throttle position.
There is also a coolant temp sensor which keeps the transmission from shifting into overdrive until the coolant temperature reaches a certain point. The sensor tells the ECM to tell the Solenoid it's ok to supply a ground to it.
Your overdrive switch provides a ground to actuate the overdrive solenoid. Make sure the switch has a solid ground serving the circuit.
The torque converter solenoid picks up it's ground from the ECM.
Both solenoids are served by the same power source which is a switched circuit through the ignition.
I hope I have shed some new light on your problem and given you some new direction in which to look. I hope I have helped you resolve your problem. If not, I'll be watching and will be ready to offer more help if needed. ..mybunkey

Why is the Overdrive disengaging while im driving

It is impossible to answer your question without knowing the YEAR, MAKE, and MODEL of your vehicle.
That being said, the overdrive will disengage when you are climbing hills or otherwise accelerating while driving.
If the overdrive disengages too easily, suspect a vacuum leak or an engine output power loss.

2005 Mountaineer 2 wheel drive, 6 cyl hard to shift when parked on incline or decline and doesnt feel like shifting into overdrive. Sometimes jump a few inches when put into reverse. Any thoughts.

Yes when you park on an incline you should always put your emergency brake on before shifting to park. Then whenyou are ready to move again put you car in gear before disengaging the emergency brake. this will remove the stress from the transmission.

2000 Nissan Frontier Gear Shift Stuck in Park?

Usually a problem with the brake switch or the electric solenoid that locks the shifter into park. That circuit would need to be tested.

The service enginelight soon came on my overdrive in th1998 frontiere nissan doesnt work a quik scan indicated it was making the light go on thanks every one for helping i

I think I missed something in your story.
The overdrive button on the shifter is used to turn the overdrive off. Otherwise you leave it on all the time. If the switch is in the off position the "o/d off" warning light should be on.
What was the trouble code in the computer that caused the check engine light to be on ?

When the truck idles the engine stops running

Does it feel as if the vehicle is not "down shifting" into low gear when you approach the stoplight? If so, then the torque converter "lock up" for OVERDRIVE may not disengaging so the vehicle is stuck in high gear and it will kill the motor. If you switch to park and it starts right back up that might be the problem. A temporary fix is to disconnect a wire from the lock-up torque converter switch, but overdrive won't work and you wouldn't want to do a lot of highway driving until you replace the lock-up switch.

I am adding trailer lights to my 1998 nissan frontier

You may be better off checking at dealer, or autoparts store for an adapter harness that goes inline. They simply plug into the harness ahead of all your tailights etc, and make it easier. At most, you may end up having to run a separate wire for brake control.

Button

The button with a "D" with a circle around is for engaging and disengaging overdrive. Your transmission typically will have 4 forward driving gears...by having overdrive disengaged your car will not go into the 4th gear. Disengaging overdrive should only be used when towing or traveling in mountainous terrain.
