My gas tank is leaking from the front where the plug is that holds the tank guard.Does the plug screw in?

The tank is under the front wheel arch. The best way is to remove wheel and splash guards and you will be able to access the tank from the engine bay and the wheel arch. Check first that the leak is not from where the pipe connects to the screen wash pump or the grommet that holds the pump in place in the tank. these would seem more likely than a split tank. The pump justs twists out of the grommet - its tight but not impossible to remove and replace if the pump has a fault on its body or pipe cionnections.

Use compression barb fittings on the pressure side with fuel injection line NOT REGULAR FUEL HOSE THE REGULAR HOSE WONT HOLD UP TO THE PRESSURE. The return line can be regular fuel line because of the low pressure.

First disconnect the negative terminal of the battery. Next left out the back seat. It is spring clipped in with two clips on the bottom left and right front of the seat. Pull clips forward and lift seat front up. I hooks in at the back so rotate the front up to unhook and lift out. In the middle under the seat is the gas gage float. Disconnect the wire connector and remove floor cover with Philips screwdriver. Then remove float from tank. This step must be done so you do not break the wire to the gas gage float. It is also the best place to siphon off the gas in the tank. Then you can remove the tank. You may have an exhaust shield to remove. The tank is held in with two straps hinged in the front and bolted in the back. Loosen the brake line clamps attached to the straps so that the clamp will slip when the tank straps are hinged down. There are several hoses and a gas connect to open. Open hose clamps. Disconnect fuel pump connector at back of tank. The fill hose needs to be worked off as you pull the tank down. There is one hose on the top back edge of the tank that needs disconnect after the tank is tipped down some. There is a rubber/plastic tank holder connected to the back flange of the gas tank. Remove the two corner screws but leave the guard connected to the straps. Remove the two strap bolts and hinge down to pull it out and disconnect all hoses. Mark with tape or some mean which hose when were.

Best to do this in a well vented area because of the fire hazard, so that the gas fumes don't accumulate.

These are used for gas fill up; remove hose clamps and disconnect.5) Remove three hoses from front of tank; these hoses go from the fuel pump to the engine. You'll need special fuel line wrenches for this.6) Disconnect two connectors at the front of the tank.7) Remove two bolts that hold the exhaust pipe heat shield. You'll want to use penetrating oil on these; they will be corroded.8) Support tank with a floor jack. Remove the bolts which hold the tank in place. Pivot the tank on the exhaust, tilt and slide out.9) The gas hoses are taped to the tank. Remove the hoses. The fuel pump plate has about 12 screws around it. Remove the screws. Lift the plate out. The fuel pump is retained with one screw. Remove the screw. Filter is retained with a clip; remove it.10) Get your new fuel pump ($250), the rubber gasket for the fuel pump plate, and new filter ($5). Compare the pump with the old one; it must be the exact lenght. I had to go to two different auto parts stores before I got the right one.Installation is opposite of above. Most likely cause of this is the steel lines on the top of the tank being corroded, BUT,

-If it leaks only when you fill up, it could be the fill hoses.

-If it leaks as soon as you fire the vehicle up, it will be the fuel pump assembly being rusted (consists of a fuel pump, fuel gauge sensor, lines and wiring, and is located in, and at the top of the fuel tank)

-If it only starts to leak after you have been driving for a bit, over bumps etc, then most likely it is the tank itself

Wade, you can do it. just buy a manual for your vehicle. it will give you detailed instructions. Plus you can use it later for other problems that arise. you will have to drop the fuel tank. A novice can do it in about4 or 5 hours on the ground.

Don't drop the gas tank. Pull back the carpet in front of the rear seat and there will be a square cover closer to behind the passenger seat with 4 screws holding it down. Remove that cover and it will expose your fuel sending unit cover. This will be circular in shape with 6 or 8 small philips head screws holding it in place. Unfortunately they will probably be very rusty and hard to get out. You will first need to disconnect the electrical plug and the 2 fuel lines. After removal of the fuel lines and the screws carefully remove unit to expose fuel pump.

check to see if theres any objects in the filler tube. If you have small children they can find a million things to do to that van

nothing can be legally done other than to replace the bad pump because if you remove the hoses on the fuel distribution valve and plug the openings and feed your engine off only one tank your truck won't pass an inspection.

Modern gas pumps have a sensor that shuts off the flow of fuel when the tank is full or it senses near the nossle tip. They also have a back splash guard that keeps fuel from splashing back on the handle. If you have some sort of flap inside your fuel tank mouth the pump may sense that the tank is already full or the back splash guard may be keeping the nozzle from fully inserting into the tank causing the same out come. I have a 1977 Triumph Spitfire that requires me to hold the fuel pump in place or the fuel won't pump. Try holding the fuel nozzle in place and see if that makes any difference.
