The part that leaks may be under the car and only sprays the fluid out under pressure. The Power steering pump can have a line which runs to a cooling Radiator that is similar to the aluminum A/C condenser sitting in front of the radiator. The fluid is routed forward to cool and then can go through the rack and pinion steering to operate the front wheels.
There can be a flat spot in the rod that travels through the seals in the rack and pinion. Eventually it wll tear the seal and leak constantly, but for now only leaks when the rod is extended to its bad spot.

Now there also may be a pressure control switch attached somewhere to kick up the Power steering pump pressure in a tight turn to reduce steering effort. This part may be in a place away from where you are looking. Different makers place controls where they want, I usually service Ford makes, but the principles are the same.

I would ask at an Autozone or similar if there is a steering pressure switch. Otherwise the car needs to be lifted off the ground with the motor running and the steering turned lock to lock.

Now most people usually never check the Power steering fluid, so that tells me you had hard steering effort or noise when you ran low on fluid or you would not have caught it.

I do not know the full routing of the tubing and hoses on a Hundai. They may even tie in the power steering fluid with the trans cooler system and the leak could be some distance away from where you think.

SOURCE: Power steering fluid leaking profusly. mec changed

If you add fluid as you go, not letting it run dry, it will be fine, but I'm wondering how much you would need to add for that long a trip. If it runs dry, the pump can seize, but if it's only for a very brief time (say one minute?) it would probably survive. I know of people running a vehicle with a dry ps pump for a rather long time, and the pump was ok, but it's got to take some life out of it. Do you or a friend belong to AAA? If you have the extra coverage (or your friend, relative, etc) you can get it towed to the mechanic for free. Coverage is good if friend is in vehicle with you when problem occurs.

SOURCE: WHICH POWER STEERING FLUID TO USE IN 2003 HYUNDAI

You must use the fluid type stipulated by the vehicle manufacturer as there are different specs for different vehicles.

The specification for power steering fluid should be listed in your owners manual. You can then purchase a quality brand at that spec.

If you don't have the owners manual ring the dealer service department or parts department and they will give you the correct specification for your particular model.

SOURCE: 2002 Santa Fe Power Steering leak

Good Day
How much are you adding every 2-3 days? The fluid has to be going some were, to me it sounds like your rack and pinion is gone. I would take your vehicle into a mechanic some were that you trust and have it check out. Having it up on the hoist will be easy to fine the problem. Like I said it could be the rack or maybe there is a small hole in on of the lines. Now the price it could be from 200 - 600 depends on were you go to have it fix. Hope this helps.

Cheers

2004 Hyundai Santa Fe - power steering fluid leak. Can't identify the hose or metal piping the leak is coming from. Not sure if I need to replace the pump as well. Would like to see a diagram of it....

Not with a diagram. Clean all the hoses and the pump so that everything is easy to see. Start the engine and get someone to put a little pressure on he steering. You should be able to find the leek.

Power steering is stiff on 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe and it is making loud noise. We checked the fluid and it is full.

hi you have checked p/steering fluid have you checked the pump drive belt ? it may be loose/worne out and in need of replacement? also more important ? when did you last check tyre pressures honestly ??? these are the 1st things to check at least weekly ? considering age of vehicle and probable milage? if the belt/s have not been renewed ? might be worth doing? before failure when you are on freeway ? you can diy belts saving $$$$s garage cost/labour charge and you can purchase from most good motor stores/factors instead of dealers prices ?

Brake lights and loose power steering in the rain

See if a wire is touching the tubing that carries the power steering fluid some times a wire will short on the tubing ,heating up the fluid and turning to vapor therefore loosing its hydrolic value.

TRANSMISION OIL TYPE!

You need to use Hyundai Diamond ATF SP-II M or any fluid which lists compatible. I recommend Hyundai brand fluid but aftermarket is ok. The listing would be on the bottle. Do no use Dextron / Mercon fluids.
