Here is one for someone to figure out. I have a 2001 Silverado 5.3. 97000 miles. When the temp outside is around 45 or below, my truck will not start if you turn the ignition key all the way, (Like you would normally start any vehicle), the motor just turns over . So I have found out if you just start turning the key just enough for the motor to turn over it will start. So now I just turn the key slowly and the motor will start. I have not problems starting it if the temp outside is warm. fortunatly I live in Texas so the temp is not below 45 very often. Has anyone ever heard of this problem. And yes my motor also has the ticking/knocking sound when you crank it up. but after about 2 minutes it goes away, I just think it is the lifters. other than that it runs great. I also have 2 other chevy vehicles in my family, with the 5.3 motor. 2002 tahoe 46000 miles, and 2004 tahoe 92000 miles. NO ticking from them. "strange"!

Your lifters have become clogged over the years. Its only after the oil warms up and thins out does it allow oil to "pump up" the lifters. That's why it goes quiet after 5 min. There are several different brands of additives on the market that can fix this problem ,unless you have a more serious mechanical problem, which I doubt.Check your local auto parts store for the additive. Just add it to your oil and "wham!" problem solved. Good Luck!

Do you have the red fluid or the green fluid in the radiator if you have the red get that junk out of there flush the radiator i had this problem in 98 The dealer said it was ok to put the green back in but i would check the thermostat first
Testimonial: "thx! it was the thermostat. changed the thermostat and took care of the problem."
