I have a bmw 316 compact, when idle it revs on its own to 2000rpm, also when driving for no reason the engine will cut out and wont start for a few mins,but when the car does restart i have 2 warning lights on, ASC and a YELLOW warning light (!).

When your ASC light is on this is to let you know your Automatic Stability Control system is switched off press the ASC button Till light is off /ASC is on this works with your rev limiter and should stabilized your idle. If the problem persists have your throttle control unit checked as thi can trigger the ASC light as well and may also activate the ABS light if not fixed

I have exactly the same problem on my 2002 316. So far I have spent £300 haveing testing and re-programming of the computer - but its still doing it!! Garage is now telling me they dont know whats wrong!!
My BMW 330D (2003) cuts out after driving for 5-10 mins occasionally. ASC light comes on, power steering doesn't work while coasting to a stop. Very worrying when you are doing 40 mph with traffic on your tail. Starts again ok if you wait for a few minutes. BMW diagnostics couldn't find anything wrong. Very frustrating AND DANGEROUS !!!!
Any ideas why this is happening.

I have a 318i, I had an MOT and the breaks replaced since then when my car get to standard working temp, The engine cuts out with the asc lights on and the break lights on. its very embarrassing & scary.
I am currently experiencing the same problem. I have a 2002 registered 316 compact. When driving all will be fine and the engine will suddenly cut out. Upon starting the engine again the asc light comes on and I have an amber brake waning light. This only occured today and i have not yet had a chance to have it looked at. Will report my findings in the coming days.
asc means automatic stability control it is when the car looses it tracking the cars stability control kicks in my bro has the same problem they said it was the camshaft sensor however they changed it for him and now it revs on its own and still cuts out can anyone make out anything bout this ? it is a BMW 318 ti compact
I have exactly the same problem on my 2001 318SE. The engine cuts out, usually when idfling- at traffic lights etc, but occaisionally when driving. Sometimes its cuts back in on it's own. Usually I can restart it while coating along (steering seems ok) but recently I've had to stop and wait a few minutes before it restarts. Independent garage can't find the problem- had an exhaust sensor changed which did nothing. Not sure if it's worth taking it to BMW- will they charge an arm and a leg for nothing?
