Repaced starter. while cranking, all I hear is the starter spinning but not engaing fly wheel

Maybe the starter needs to be shimmed or adjusted so it aligns with the flywheel, or there are teeth missing on the flywheel. The Bendix is supposed to have the gear slide up a shaft and connect with the flywheel. Maybe it is bound or doesn't let the gear slide freely.

2002 mazda 626 new starter wont engage flywheel. it sounds like starter is spining wont engage flywheel

Couple possibilities. Was the starter just replaced? If so. Were their any shims (small metal pieces) that were not put back? They space the starter so the bendix and gear can align with fly wheel.. secondly could be a bad starter, broke bendix. Bad gear..or third missing teeth on either fly wheel or starter..

99 saturn will not crank after installing a new starter

you may need a shim between your starter and the block. Most starters are ok, but some need shims so that the teeth on starter line up with teeth on flywheel. Starter is probably jammed

Bad starter

It is either a bad starter or a bad fly wheel. What happens is the teeth of one or the other wear down. If you are turning the starter several times and it finally starts then you have a bad spot on your fly wheel. One way to check is to pull out the starter and look at the teeth on it. If it is your fly wheel it should be replaced but you will have some time. As the wheel turns you will probably not hit the bald spot on it that often.

1999 m cougar 2.5 v6 auto. the starter grinds it usually takes about 5 or 6 trys to start the car. a shop told me it was the fly wheel but i jacked up the car and there are no teeth missing on the fly...

Teeth may not be missing on the flywheel, but they are supposed to be a certain thickness and the teeth may have worn too thin to mesh correctly.

Some cars also use shims to change the angle in which the starter contacts the flywheel. You may want to check with a local auto parts store to see if a new starter comes with shims.

I have an 1986 lincoln towncar i got a new fly wheel put on it and starter but for the past four months a have used three or more starters. everytime i start the car it has a loud scratching noise, couple...

the 4" dd starter had two different flanges for A/T and M/T. Your new flywheel probably doesn't match the teeth for the drive on the starter. Take the starter to a rebuilder that actually knows what they're doing-- not a parts store.

Put new starter (twice) on my 1993 Ford Explorer V-6 engine. Car does crank, but has a grinding noise. Please help.

i think you have either a spaceing problem ie need to shim starter or your fly wheel is damaged look at teeth on fly wheel make sure there good also check your book and see if there are shims on that starter

Dose starter need shims

It all depends. Normally when you buy a replacement starter there is a piece of straight wire that comes with it that helps you to "gap" the tranny's fly wheel teeth to the starter's teeth...so they mesh properly.

Are you asking because you have flywheel damage on the transmission side or are you having starter problems?

WHEN I CRANK MY BLAZER I HEAR A GRINDING NOISE WHEN I TURN THE KEY TO CRANK IT....SOMEONE said something about the shins ( starter),,,someone said water pump....someone said radiator

I don't see how the noise you hear could be coming from the water pump or radiator but yes it could be coming from not having the starter shimmed out far enough from the ring gear. Did you change the starter or do anything prior to hearing this noise?
