Both the Check Engine light and the Slip Indicator light on my 2009 Tacoma came on for no apparent reason. The truck has only 34,000 miles on it. After reading blogs on the internet by people having the same problem with their Tacoma, I tried the easiest potential fix first: just tighten the gas cap until it "clicks" and disconnect the positive cable from the battery for about 20 minutes. Bingo, that fixed the problem! Those simple actions saved me a trip to the Toyota dealer and who knows how much in charges by their service department.

Had the check engine & VSC lights come on. Did not notice any different behaviour of my 2009 Pre-Runner.
Read in one 'fix' to disconnect the battery for 15 - 20 minutes and restart. But first I went to Toyota and with a 'smile' they said that will be 1 1/2 hours and $130.00!
OK - so I politely excused myself and brought the truck home. Figured I'd try the discnnect the battery fix first, then take it to my mechanic. VIOLA!! This appears to have done the trick when the truck was restarted, it went out. Also for the sake of - reset the gas cap and took the opportunity to do a little battery maintenance.

Trust this helps, but is not the 'fix-all' for anything beyond the system just didn't re-set itself properly!

So I also have a Tacoma (2011 w/ 75,000 mi) with the slip / check engine lights on. It’s throwing C1201 and P0430. Having researched, it said that my driver’s side downstream 02 sensor was bad, so I replaced it. Lights went out for about 100 miles, then came back. Reset my ECM and did a zero point calibration on my VSC and made sure my gas cap was tight. Lights out again for about 100 miles, then came back. Knowing Toyota has issued recalls on other catalytic converters (not my VIN series, but others), I fear I may need to replace them. Not cheap. Btw, I had a local shop recently replace the rear brake lines that rusted through as well. The sensors run about $100 each, so I don’t want to do another $300 in trouble shooting just to find out that my Cat Converters were bad all along.

SOURCE: Toyota Avalon 2006, I ahve a VSC indicator light

VSC is Vehicle Skid Control. The system is usually on, but when you turn it off (on my mother's 01 Avalon, it's on the knee bolster, below and to the right of the steering column), the indicator comes on in the cluster to let you know it's turned off - it's just a reminder to you that you don't have that safety net activated. The way the car is set up, even if you turn it off, when you shut down the engine and then restart it later, the system is rearmed automatically.

What I'm thinking is, since you've obviously had the engine on and off and the VSC OFF and TC OFF warnings are still illuminated, you probably have a problem with either an ABS sensor, a yaw sensor, or something related to those, as those systems rely on a bunch of sensors to work. If they have failed, it should illuminate the check-engine light. Stop at Auto Zone or Advance Auto Parts and have them scan the car's computer (it's free). They'll give you a list of the fault codes that come up. If you post them up here, I can define them for you and help you solve the problem - just post them as a reply or follow-up on this posting.

Testimonial: "Thanks a bunch!! Big help and I will do what was suggested to solve the problem. Thanks again."

SOURCE: Warning lights on a 2006 toyota rav 4 32,000 miles

I had the same problem. A computer check showed that the emission system was having difficulty. The catalytic converter had to be replaced. The car had under 80,000 miles on it so it was covered by a warranty (State law? Federal law?).
My battery was also dead. That was replaced free too. It had a 7 year warranty.
I do NOT purchase extended warranties.

SOURCE: 2006 RAV4 V6 multiple cylinder misfire, VSC, check engine and sli

You need a scanner to pull out the engine light codes.
Use a shopu manual to aid you with the diagnosis and repair.
The slip indicator and vsc light being on means these systems are not working. Once you pull the codes and do the repair and erase the codes the lights will go off.
There will be a code in there for the misfiring.
Good luck and keep me posted.

SOURCE: The VSC TRAC, Slip Indicator and Check engine

Go to a major auto parts store and ask for them to read out your diagnostic trouble codes. They will usually do that for free. When the check engine light comes on, the car's computer has trouble codes that are waiting in memory to be read by a code reader. Most major auto parts stores have a code reader--ready and waiting to help customers find out what is wrong. Write back here with your codes and we can help you too!

My car show AT check light when starting but it disappears in seconds. Is it normal or should I have it checked? VDC OFF and SLIP lights come on in wet weather too

This is probably a Nissan vehicle and all is ok and working as it should be, nothing to worry about. The AT light will show initially to indicate the light is working and then go off because it has not been activated..........the VDC off light and slip light will illuminate together when the traction is being corrected (as you indicated when driving in wet weather) this is all normal, hope this helps you understand your vehicle a bit better.

Service engine soon, SLIP, TC OFF LIGHTS ON

I had the same indications on My 2000 Maxima but the engine was also running rough . I replaced the number 3 cylinder ignition module and all of the spark plugs and all of the error lights are back to normal I had to reset the check engine light by disconnecting the battery for about 15 minutes.By the way my car has 253,000 miles on it so if you have a lot of miles on your car you might want to check all of the ignition modules so pull your spark plugs and read them they might tell you where your problem is .

Shaking with engine light and VSC Off lights turned on

If just found this on another forum:

A few days ago I started the Cruiser and had 4 indicators stay lit.
They were the CHECK ENGINE...SLIP INDICATOR..VSC TRAC..VSC OFF.
Didnt noticed any change in driving and 4-wheel drive is still working.
I removed the negative cable from the battery and the same indicator lights have NOT come back. Everything is back to normal as far as warning lights go. Should I take it in to the service center and have it checked.
Or should I wait to take it in, if it does it again?
