    Have a v70 2000 (made 03/2000) 5244s motor... ?
I have a re-occuring idle issue that I thought was linked to the etm, have cleaned the idle air control valve, gasket looks new, green one, and have cleaned the mass air flow meter.. with the proper cleaner maf cleaner.. as directed.. mechanic.. still I have these issues, thanks
    1. when driving, I take my foot off accellerator, up and down throttle no lights are on while this is on, etm or check engine

    2. When approaching a firm complete stop idle raises as if to engage the car to push me through the stop.. have to press harder to stop..???

    3. crappy mileage.. 15 city 20 hwy.. been noticing.. or worse.

    4. idle at rest after warmed up is 1000 to 1200 depending on mild fluctuations..
Notes: I cleaned the idle control valve.. with cleaner.. after I did this the idle did a little better..

Thanks.. Oh.. checked all lines runnging to breather box and brake booster from the intake manifold.. like new..
Car has been maintained for the most part
    Miles 134k.. timing done 120k

Can't believe no one mentioned this -- because it's a very old Volvo trick. Try cleaning the old one first (they get filled with carbon deposits) with carb cleaner ; until the fluid runs clear. Allow it to dry, then refit.

I have a 2001 volvo s40. It runsa smoothly most of the 99% of the time but when i come to a stop at a light or stop sign, it stalls out! I hear it could be a ( Idle air controll motor) It starts right back...

Sounds like your ETM - Electronic Throttle Module.

Search for xemodex. He has a direct replacement for 1999-2001 Volvos. I ordered mine from him, and its much better now.

Get a quote from your dealer, then compare the prices.

My 01 volvo s40 runs fine with the air on as long as im driving. When i come to a stop like at a light within a couple seconds the battery light comes on, the radio cuts off like the cars going to die...

two things.
1 the a/c compressor is binding inside thepump(going to die)
2 if the ecm computer is doing its job, the idle air control motor on the side of the throttle body is not working properly. not nessesarily bad may need cleaned

Engine acceleration

Causes for the car accelerating on its own are:

The cable under the hood that operates the gas is getting stuck.

Throttle pedal stuck.

Idle air control valve faulty.

There is a large vacuum leak.

ECU car computer is faulty.

The most common is the IAC, the repair is not expensive, but the car cannot be driven in this conditions.
