Question about 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

93 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2 stalls when driving

Once the engine is fully up to temperature it runs great, anywhere from cold to just under op temp, it has a very bad habit of stalling out but will recrank shortly after, a few seconds up to 30 seconds. Is very frustrating. Already changed out the pcm as was suggested elsewhere, did not help. Also has new fuel pump, fuel filter, spark plugs, vacuum is good.

SOURCE: 93 Jeep Grand Cherokee Won't start

The crankshaft position sensor was seriously problematic in those old jeeps. It's located towards the top of the bell housing slightly to the driver's side I think.

Try cleaning the idle air controle. Mine was shutting off everytime it warms up and woldnt stay on durintg idling. The engine will reset after some miles of driving like that and correct but once the battery cable is unhooked it resets back to normal and will give you the same problems. Cleaning the IAC will correct......

Change the temperature sending unit/temp sensor. When starting, the sensor will tell the computer to put the engine in cold start mode to give a bit more fuel and raise the idle a little so it WILL start and keep running without ever touching the throttle. Once warm-up is completed, this sensor will tell the computer to stop the cold start mode and go to normal run mode. THAT is your only problem.

Those motors run HOT. if your not losing any coolant and your system has a fairly recent i.e. in the last two years been flushed I wouldnt worry about it.

93 jeep grand cherokee. Starts and idles ok.

Being injected, the control system varies fuel quantity and does not directly regulate air flow. Therefore, having black soot on plugs tells you that there is too much fuel going into the engine. The O2 sensor tends to react to, more than control that. Missing can be the result of plug fouling. Backfire may be the result of a too rich fuel mix permitting unburned fuel to enter the hot exhaust where it re-ignites.
Where I would look first in your case is to the manifold air temp sending unit and the coolant temp sender as well. If either or both are out of range the computer may "think" it is running a cold engine and therefore adding additional fuel for cold start up,and not switching to normal run mode when the engine reaches operating temp. Once the plugs foul the engine will continue to run poorly regardless of other conditions. You can test each component individually using either chilton or haynes manual as a guide. You will need a decent digital multi-meter to do the tests.
You can also have a code test done at most major parts stores, but often if sensors are not bad enough to set a code but together are causing a problem, you may not see anything except the O2 sensor.
There are other possible causes such as worn out injectors, but most often that won't happen in all cylinders at the same time. Do testing first, correct whatever you find and then make sure plugs are clean. If after running, the O2 sensor continues to register a fault, then replace it.
Good luck...any further questions are welcome and don't forget to rate answers!!!

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee stalls immediately after

check intake manifold air temp sensor and engine coolant sensor...one may be out of range but not enough to turn on dash light. tests and specs can be found in chiltons or haynes, test is done with digital multi-meter.

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Engine Stays Cold

If you have verified that the dash temp gauge is correct by checking temp of coolant in radiator, yes your guess would be what i would change, the engine needs to have a 195degree thermostat in it.195 degrees is what the computer is programed to see as normal running temp.

My 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 keeps stalling when I start it. Only happens when its warm. Cold start OK. Many thanks. Rob.

hi, this problem to me sounds like the oxygen sensor needs replacing as when the vehicle is first started or from cold you will find it starts with no problems but once its up to temperature then you start getting problems.
This is due to the oxygen sensor(lambda sensor as its proper name) not working when the engine is cold it only starts working when the engine is up to temp so if this is when your getting the problems then this is what i would look at first.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

Could be a sensor.I'm thinking more along the lines of a fuel pump or fuel filter. If the fuel pump is going bad..similar symptoms.Would be advisable to install a pressure gauge at the engine, and check fuel pressure when it's acting up.
