Engine problem related to fuel refill

Car runs fine until I refuel. Afterwards when the ignition is turned the first time seems like the starter sticks until I turn the key off. After that, it will start but I have to pump the accelerator once or twice to get it to start. For a few moments it runs rough, then straightens out and runs fine until the next fill up. My guess is a vacuum issue related with removing the gas cap. Could not locate any loose vacuum hoses. Help would be appreciated.

Evaporative emission
The Evaporative Emission Control System (EVAP) is used to prevent gasoline vapors from escaping into the atmosphere from the fuel tank and fuel system. The EVAP system usually requires no maintenance, but faults can turn on the Check Engine light and prevent a vehicle from passing an OBD II plug-in emissions test.

It could be a loose wire or connector, defective or dirty contacts in the lock cylinder, broken wire coming from the lock cylinder or a temperature sensitive module to name a few things.

If this happens only when the temperature is cold, it could be a leaking Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR), or due to lost pressure in the fuel lines due to cold, in which case you may have to replace the fuel pump / fuel filter / clean injectors.

The best way to diagnose this is to actually take it to a mechanic and have him check for you.

same problem 06 CTS...you probably hear a ticking noise under the hood, and car will not start after re-fueling- check engine code is like a p0442? which is a leak in the fuel system. you can try buying a new gas cap from cadillac or an ac-delco distributor to start. its only about twenty dollars. disconnect battery for about ten minutes to reset check engine light or find a local shop with an obd-2 scanner to reset light and re-diagnose. If check engine light comes back on with same code replace the evap. purge valve.(about $25) it is located on the passenger side of car on the intake manifold. it has one electrical connector and two hoses connected to it. no tools required to change which is a plus! disconnect battery or find local shop to reset light again. this should take care of the problem!!

hey there. my name is dwayne, and im contacting you for help on my 98 caddy deville. well three days ago. i got a alarm installed. and friday i was driving on da high way and it just turned off. and smoke started coming from my steering wheel. engines coolant temp. was only 200 no smoke was coming from engine. now car wont start at all.!! please help

To do self diag on a pt u need to start with ignition off. Hold trip button in for the odometer keeping trip button held down turn ignition key to run then release trip. This will also run a self test on instrument cluster. Codes will be displayed in the odometer at the end of test

P0172 fault code

It could be an emmissions problem. Sometimes even the gas cap being loose can cause a code. Make sure to tighten the cap when done refuelling...you should hear repetitive clicks when its tight. Other components related to code p0172 are o2 sensor(bank 1) and catalytic converters. Hope this helps!

indicates that the fuel was petrol and not diesel
best id to drain the tank , change the fuel filters and refill with the correct fuel
could be contaminated tank at the station but as most have a petrol and diesel hoses side by side it is easy to fill from the wrong hose

Engine shuts down

The only way to know for sure is to hook a gauge to the rail and check the fuel pressure when it won't start.
Sitting for a few minutes and restarting is normally a sign of a relay or coil cooling off.
There should be a EEC relay that powers the dist module and ECM.
I know you said you have spark, but it could be something else
related.
Also, if you have spark at the right time and no fuel pressure, you should be able to use starting fluid to substitute.
I don't suppose you have dual tanks and the switching valve is the problem ?

Car won't start after putting gas in it kia 2003

I have seen this problem several times. The EVAP Purge Solenoid in the engine compartment is sticking open. When you refuel your vehicle, the open solenoid is allowing fumes from the fuel tank to flood the intake manifold with fumes. This is what is keeping your engine from starting...too much fuel and very little air. Most of the time your check engine light will also be coming on while you are driving your vehicle and the code that sets will say "P0441 Evaporative Emission System Incorrect Purge Flow" or there will be some other manufacturer-specific code or code description that will read something like "Purge Detected During Non-Purge" or "Purge Control Valve Stuck Open". However, I have also seen this happen without setting any codes at all (also see below). In each case that I have encountered, replacing the purge valve fixed the problem.

Also make sure your engine is turned off and the ignition switch is in the OFF or LOCK position when refueling. I have also seen this caused when somebody turns the engine off, then turns the ignition back to the ON position so passengers can "listen to the stereo" during the refueling process. This can cause the computer to open the purge valve during refueling. When it happens this way, there will be no fault codes stored and no repairs need to be made to the vehicle.

Have just changed fuel filter on 2010 Focus1.8 duratorq engine and refilled filter cannister. Engine started and ran until cannister emptied and then stopped. Refilled cannister but would not start. How...

Turn the ignition "on" without cranking the engine - wait for 30 seconds.

Turn the Ignition back off for 10 seconds.

Repeat 3 times.

All air will be purged back into the fuel tank.

1987 chrysler lebaron 2.5, car runs fine, then cuts out, after awhile it runs again. in-tank fuel pump whirrs when ignition is turned on but only for a second, the car seems to have elec. when it kicks out...

i have had simmilar problems with my dodge dynasty and in the end an ignition coil fixed the problem.the fuel does only run for a second the will not run again until it see engine speed

Engine turns over fine , car will not start.

well the first part of your question i was all ready to tell you to put a new fuel pump in, now not so sure, there is a relay for fuel pump, can you hear pump cycle and relay click? relay under hood you will have to listen close they don't run long maybe a couple secounds, if you don't relay bad. if you do pump could be bad, do fuel pressure test pump could be weak. don't think sunroof and turn signals are related, but stranger things have happend.

Fuel pressure regulator makes hissing sound

your fuel pump should cycle on until the proper fuel pressure is achieved then it should shut off
