Easy way is to check on Autozone.com and go to the specific repair section search your vehicle and check timing belt replacement, and align the crank on the TDC mark and the #1 arrow and the triangle on the head

The keyway and or the dot on the crank should be line at 12 oclock. You will see a point on the oil pump housing to go by. On the camshaft the pointer will be at 12 oclock also. Use the O on the camshaft to the top at mark. Be sure to look at the dist. roter to make sure that it is pointing at the #1 spark plug wire. I could get 180 out of time. If you do it right it should start up right away. then you can use a timing light to finish it.

Fiat Bravo 1.4 2007 Changing timing belt as in timing marks

You would be safer finding the timing marks at the belt end. The marks will be there but sometimes they are just a pain in the tailbone to find. The engine hits TDC twice in a cycle on each cylinder. You need to be on the correct one to set timing. These are not always marked on a fly wheel.

How do I reset the timing?

First pull the timing belt tensioner then slip the belt off the cam gears. You then need to find TDC (Top dead center). 3 ways to find TDC 1) There are marks on the crank pulley align them for TDC. 2) Remove timing cover and use crank gear mark seen in link below 3) Put the dip stick in cylinder 1 and turn engine until dip stick stops going up. After finding TDC align cam gear marks seen in link below. Now make sure both cam and crank stay in position and slip timing belt back on (you can move the cam gear to get the belt on but make sure the marks are aligned after the belt is on). Last tighten the belt tensioner, I usually use my finger or an extension to get some more tension on the belt. You might have to remove engine mount bracket makes life much easier as the front cover section is TIGHT !!!. Turn engine a few times to make sure you have compression and engine turns without getting stuck. See link below good luck.

How to change a timing belt

You may follow these steps:

1. Remove any shrouding in the wheel so that you can access the lower timing belt pulley and the crankshaft snout.

2. Locate the timing marks on the flywheel and cam, then you set them both to TDC. The flywheel pulley TDC mark is accessible through a hole in the bellhousing. The camshaft TDC is easy to locate, especially if you added some marks.

3. Support the engine with something like skyhook if you want to remove the rightside motor mount. Most belts are installed with a mount in the center, making them problematic when changing. You can now remove the motor mount temporarily.

4. Freeing up the belt tensioner pulley can release any belt tension.

5. Slip through the new belt into place and make sure that you are not disturbing the cam or crank pulleys, or else the engine will be out of time if changes and adjustments are made. Then check by slowly rotating the crank to two full turns with a socket on the crank snout.

1991 Mazda Miata 1.6l timing belt broke.

You need to purchase a Haynes Manual or better. They are very common in your nearest chain part store. Like Autozone, Advance, Napa. More than likely you will have to set the crankshaft at TDC. "top dead center" and allign the two marks with the cam shaft! Watch when you put tension on the belt it will move the camshaft sprocket! And throw it back out of time.

I need to replace the cam belt on Mazda Familia Z5 DOHC can you tell me how to line up the timing marks

After you remove the timing belt cover you will see the two small gear wheels on the top of the engine, there should be, just above the center bolts of the gears, a little raised bump or notch these are the TDC (top dead center) marks they should also have a corresponding mark on the engine housing that they will need to be pointed at. As well the crank wheel also has similar marks. These all need to be TDC. You will then thread the belt onto the gears, keeping it tight, from the crank, over the two cams, passed the tensioner and back to the crank. Turn the crank by hand two complete turns using a breaker bar and socket on the crank shaft bolt. Look at the marks and they all should be back at TDC, if not repeat the process until they are. If they are try starting the engine. A timing gun may be needed to fine tune it but it should be close enough to run. Good luck
