Convertible top will not retrack

I had the trunk open and began putting the top down. the roof lid became wedged between the open trunk. I manually pulled them apart. So when I tried to put the top down again the bottom part of the convertible top became stuck on the trunk lid. now the trunk lid dosn't stand up all the way, like it use to. so i had to pull the lever under the backseat and use an allan wrench to close the top manually. Now the red light above the convertible switch flashes continously and nothing happens when you push the switch. A friend told me that I will have to take it to a dealer to have it reset? Note: i already adjusted the push arm for the top that is under the trunk lid. could this of affected the trunk lid not raising completely?   thanx, stan

My 1999 BMW M3 Convertible top will not retract when pressing the button. The red light flashes and nothing will function. How do you manually override the controls to open/close the top? What solution does anyone have to correct this problem?

thank you! i engaged both motors then i did the initialization sequence. the top went up and down for 5 cycles then the top cover would not open again. so i tried to disengage the top cover motor and it wouldn't release. the 2 latch cables were super tight and the motor arm was at its highest point and wouldn't move. so i pryed the motor apart and the tension was released from the cables. i reengaged the motor again and did the initialization sequence again. it worked for 4 cycles this time. i have the e36_convertible_adjust.pdf file but i cannot see the images and type on how to adjust the motor. is this the problem? thanks

Hi Stan

First of all the roof is not even soppose to operate while the trunk is open - So there is the first problem Ive been involved with BMW's for a long time and this is the first Ive heard of a roof opening while the trunk is open. There is a built in feature that tells the car not to open the roof if the trunk is open and the other way roung while the roog lid is open the trunk cant open.

The reason the roof is not working anymore as soon as there is stress on the roof the electric motors(One operates the roof and the other operates the roof lid)  disengages, You said that the roof still worked but the lid did not so probably only the one motor disengaged. So what you have to do is open the trunk on the left hand side right behind the tail light pull away the material and simply just push the electric motor into place. that should fix your problem.

It may happen that the two motors have become out of sync, Disengage both electric motors manualy put the roof away engage the motors and that should put the roof and lid back into sync.

On my 1998 mercedes benz sl600 i cant get the convertable top to open. i have replaced two of the struts for the roof and now my roof wont open. is there a way to resync the roof or am i just doing so

The top is controlled by you guessed it a computer module, have the dealer test that with a scan tool. The top is very complex in the control end, not simple like the old Mustangs I used to fix

E36 BMW convertible top operating it manually

Hey there, I have experienced the same problem. You need to reengage both motors if you have disengaged them pulling the lever undernearth the rear driverside seat. Make sure to put the black lever back under the seat to the position before pulling on it.

You should have the top in the down position before engaging the motors back in place.

To engage the motors: The motors are located under the carpet in the trunk on the driver side. There are two black clips you will need to remove in order to pull the carpet back. One of the motors is located near the taillight. This motor is responsible for the storage lid cover. The motor that is located further in the drunk is the motor for the fabric top to move up and down. Make sure to firmly press these motors back into place. They should not move.

Once you have engaged the motors, go into your car put the key into the ignition and have the convertible top button pressed up (meaning to close the top), move the key to the accessory positio and hold it for 10-12 seconds. You will finally see the trunk lid get pulled closed. The car will now attempt to completely close the lid. If your motors are working fine it will close. If your only intention is to get the lid to close on it's own it should be accomplished.

Good luck!

2001 vw cabrio convertible top won't go up or down

Am I correct in assuming that you have an electric roof? I recently saw in my manual that there is a hydraulic lift that you can access from the trunk of the car. It looks like it is on the left side wall close to the opening. The following is taken directly from the manual:
"If the power system is not operating properly you can still close the roof by hand. 1. Remove protective cover and open luggage compartment lid. 2. Turn screw on hydraulic pump counterclockwise until it stops. 3. Close the luggage compartment lid. 4. Swing the top forward by grabbing it with both hands, lift and push it forward. 5. Lock roof in place. 6. Turn the screw on hydraulic pump clockwise until it stops. Use the same procedure in reverse order to open the power roof manually."

Trunk and hood manual latch won't work

That is not the problem the problem is your convertable roof is not closing properly to test this let someone press down on the roof lid and then try to open the trunk, To fix this let the roof lid open and let the roof come up until the back part stands up to let the roof lid close so that the roof hold is exposed look on the right hand side of the car (if your standing at the back) under the roof lid catch there is a small plastic buttun that the roof lid catch needs to pres down on, this tells the car that the roof lid is seucre and it is now safe to let open the trunk, All you have to do is set the tension on the cable for that roof lid catch and the problem is sorted.

Convertable roof and trunk won't open

The Roof Mechanism works with two motors similiar to the ones that wund the windows. Now the two mechanism are located in the left side of the trunk.

The trunk wont open Because of the roof lid that is not closed properly. How you can test this is to press down on the right sid of the roof lid and then try to opne the trunk.

Now the reason that this is happening is that the roof lid is not closing properly nad pressing on a small orange buttin located just below the right hand side roof lid catch. How you are going to remedy this problem is to adjust the cable tension to close more securely.

Now the two motors in the trunk that works the convertable roof can be engaged and disengaged on motor works the roof lid and the other one the roof.

You need to get these motors in sync so that they open and close the roof in the correct order.

That is if the electric are still working.

1997 BMW 328i convertible

The problem is that your roof(SOFT TOP) lid isnt closing properly. If you open the roof lid you see there is a button on one of the latches that tells the car that the roof is securely closed if your roof lid is not secure the trunk wont open. To test this press down on the roof lid and the try to open the trunk.
