Tail light assembly keeps going bad on my 1999 GMC Sierra

Rear tail light assembly keeps goes bad. In the last 2 years, I've had to replace the left rear taillight assembly four times. Now, the right assembly is acting up. Why would the truck continue to ruin the rear tail light assemblys circuit boards? Does anyone else have this problem? How do I fix it once and for all without having to sell one of my children to buy a new truck?

I know it's not the harness because I can connect the left tail light assembly to the right side and it works fine.

SOURCE: replacement of rear outside tail light assembly

If you're asking how do you change a taillight bulb, then follow this procedure:

Open the trunk lid.

Disconnect the connectors from the taillights (taillight bulb connectors are visible by looking inside the trunk at the back of the tail lamps.) There may be an interior trunk trim panel that you have to take off but in most cases its just a series of thumb screws that hold them in.

Brake Lights/Taillights: 21/5 W

Rear Turn Signal Light: 21 W

Back-up Light: 21 W

Rear Side Marker Light: 5 W

Turn the bulb sockets 45 º counterclockwise to remove the bulbs.

If you're removing the taillamps with the bumper off there are 3 nuts and screws that hold the taillight to the rear panel of the car that have to come off from the inside of the trunk.
Remove the nuts and screws, then remove the taillight.

hope that answers your question

SOURCE: How do you replace rear tail light assembly?

Open the trunk and along the bottom of the tail light, there should be a Philips screw securing a cover piece. (your car may or may not have this piece)
With the cover off, there will be another 2 screws securing the bottom of the tail light assembly. Remove the screws and pull the bottom out and the top is held in by two retainers that should just slide right out

check fuses , check all rear lights , as if to replace them, visually inspect both tail light assemblies , look for bad connections, broken or corroded tail light assymblys, might just be a fuse or a light, the parking light doesn't work, understand ?

98 Chevy Tahoe, drivers side rear tail light assembly wont work, brake / turn signal. Replaced entire assembly, it worked for about 3 days then stopped working again. I need to get this fixed before I get...

I've got the same problem on 98 GMC Sierra.

I'm an electrical engineer, I checked the electrical diagrams and verified that there is no problem in the rear lamp assembly or wiring. With the light assembly unplugged, I can actually watch the blinker and brake signals operate with a voltmeter. The Tail light works OK.

It simply won't provide enough current to light the bulbs.

I'm afraid that it's melted one of a pair of normally closed contacts inside the blinker switch that feed the brake and turn separately on each side.

My 1998 GMC Sierra rear blinkers and brake lights keep malfunctioning When I take the lens apart they will start working if I move them around but does not last. Sounds like a problem with the board, or is...

Yes, you have a bulb socket board issue. From the body styke change in 1988 to 1998, GM trucks have issues with the tail lamp circuit boards going out. Replaced those boards and you will fix the problem.
