Look at your owners manual and locate the fuse box. The manual or the fuse box cover should indicate which fuse is for the tailight circuit.
If it is just the tail lights, you may have a broken wire connection or a brake light switch problem.
Could be bulbs as well.
I had the same problem, where the radio dash lights also goes out. All you have to do is go to the fuse box located on the passenger side of the car under the hood. It is the first fuse in the front of the fuse box it should be blue.(10 fuse) You can temp. replace it with a higher fuse if u have to, it will work the same.
The tail lights are also called parking lights. There is a 10amp fuse for each rear parking lamp. The fuses are in the rear fuse box. Your owner's manual will tell you where that fuse box is located. The fuses get power from a park lamp relay.
Your Protege has a dedicated fuse for the tailight circuit, as well as a relay. The fuse should be located in the passenger compartment fuse box, but it could be located in the main fuse box in the engine compartment drivers side inside fender area. It should be labeled TAILIGHT, and be 15A, or 20A. The relay is most likely in the main fuse box as well, but I can't tell from the attached drawing so you'll have to track it down if necessary.
your wiring may have gotten pinched by crossmember or something else.i would check for power out of the fuse block.there are four wires on the right side coming out of your fuse box with a seperate flat vertical plug, the colors are brown, dark green, yellow and light green.brown is tailight, light green for your backup lights and green and yellow for left and right stoplight/turn signals.use a test light at the plug.
