There are two different ways to relearn your Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). One is with a TPMS scan tool (this is the preferred method) and the other is the manual method (pain in the "you-know what", but requires no special tools or equipment).
To use the manual method, set the parking brake. Enter into TPMS RELEARN using the Driver Information Center (DIC) controls. (SEE Owner's Manual)
When you have successfully entered TPMS RELEARN, the horn will chirp and the left front turn signal will illuminate. Increase or decrease the tire inflation pressure on the left front tire for 8 to 10 seconds. The horn will "chirp", indicating that the left front tire pressure sensor has been relearned and the turn signal at the right front will illuminate. Repeat the process for the right front tire. The horn will chirp and the right rear turn signal will illuminate indicating that the right front tire has been relearned and now you must now repeat the process at the right rear tire. Then you will have to repeat this a fourth time at the left rear. When the left rear tire has been relearned, the horn will sound a "double chirp" indicating that the relearn process has successfully completed.
At this time, turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and adjust all of the tire pressures to the specification printed on the tire certification label inside the drivers door/door pillar area.
Testimonial: "by the time i got the answer on fixya i already stopped by a chevy dealership. He also said the method that the manual shows to do the reset for tire monitor is a pain. He resat it with the proper tool and said that no matter if the manual says to reset the tire monitor system when putting air in tires don't do it. It will automaticall reset itself. Thanks"
What the guy at the dealership told you is not exactly true. The light will turn off after about 25 or 30 miles of driving after you adjust your tire pressures. However, it WILL NOT clear any fault codes in the system unless you do a relearn. This may not present a problem to you unless you have a tire pressure sensor failure. Here's the problem: Say your right front tire is low. The TPMS sets a code for a low tire and identifies the right front tire as the problem-child. You adjust your tire pressure and simply drive until the light goes out. There is still a fault code in the system for the right front tire. Then a month or two later, you have a failure of the left rear tire pressure sensor and the light comes back on. You adjust your tire pressures because you have no way of knowing that it is a failed sensor causing the light to come on this time. You drive the vehicle for 30 miles and the light still has not gone out. You check your tire pressures again and you cannot figure out why the light will not go out. So you take the thing in for service to find out what is wrong and they proceed in pulling codes from the system and they find 2 codes - 1 for the right front and one for the left rear. So now they sell you 2 tire pressure sensors at about $75 each when you only needed the left rear one.
If you use the method I described above, it is not that big of a deal and will remove any codes from the system as the TPMS relearns. The way I used to do it (before I invested in a TPMS scanner) was to put the thing into learn mode BEFORE adjusting ANY tire pressures. Then I let air out of each of the tires during the relearn process. (You can either add air or remove air - it makes no difference - the computer is only looking for a CHANGE in pressure) Once I get the final double-chirp, then I simply add air to all of the tires to bring them up to specification. It really is not hard once you get the hang of it. However, I do recommend relearning the system each time if the light has illuminated. The way to keep the light from illuminating in the first place is to check your tire pressures and adjust them to specs regularly. I usually recommend at least once a month to all of my customers. Some do it more often than that (and usually have absolutely no problems), and there are others that will not check them at all until the light comes on. Then they fuss about the fact that I must charge for the time that I spend resetting their system for them.
Also, checking your tire pressures regularly is not only good for keeping that pesky light out of your face, it will also increase your average fuel mileage. At the prices we are now paying - and the expected continuing rise in fuel prices, your fuel mileage needs all the help it can get!

Thank you! I was about to give it to the service dept. This worked! Took about 10 minutes including airing up to proper P.S.I.

You need to set all the pressures to 35 psi. first then drive for approx.1/4 mile. If this doesn't work to reset the light (keep in mind the code itself will still be stored even though the light goes off) you will need to take it to your Nissan Dealer to have it scanned as there may be a malfunction with the sensor. If faulty and you are under 36k miles then it should be covered under your factory warranty. Hope this helps.
