My Mitsubishi Lancer is making a whining noise when I accelerate usually when I am on the interstate. I am not sure what this could be. Maybe the power steering? or the pulley system? Thanks for any and all help

I have an 03 and around 30,000 miles the same thing happened to me . I took it to the dealer and the replaces the idler pully wich is what was making the noise .hope this helps you
SOURCE: A high pitched whining noise in the engine.
This Noise Description sounds Indicative of the Sounds that come from the Serpentine Belt Or Related parts such as Belt Idler Pulley or Belt Tentioner witch also has a Pulley, but if Tensioner itself is Literally BROKE I've replaced a number like this it will cause a Whining noise . Best case scenario its just the Belt, and if any of the other Problems turn out to be the Culprit the Belt MUST be Replaced Anyhow as Damage is Being caused By the Very Whining you hear.
PLEASE Spend the Extras $ for the BEST BELT as this Drives your Water pump, Alternator, A/C Compressor, Power Steering Pump All Crucial to Control of, easy Steering ,All Electrical-Power Distribution, The COOLING of Engine << VERY CRITICAL Component
The Pulleys usually have a more Hum type Whining. So I would say at Best The BELT , And WORST Belt Tentioner is Broke

First of all would it come from a drive belt ?

If power steering fluid level is full and whine noise happens after engine and trans is warm and been driven for a while it could be a trans problem. This make and model trans is noted for having a sticking EPC(electronic pressure control) solenoid inside the trans. The trans controller detects an internal trans slip and starts jacking up line pressure which makes the trans pump whine, it sounds just like a power steering pump. When this happens it will also start shifting gears very hard. Take vehicle to a trans shop and have them check it, there will most likely be a code P1811-long shift, max. adapt met. This code means the controller has seen an internal trans component slipping and has jacked up the line pressure to the max position and the slip is still present. Unfortunately this is not a repair that can be completed at home as the trans needs to come out and apart.
Hope this helps.

If the whining is all the time, and changes pitch when you turn the wheel, then thats your problem. Rebuilt Power Steering Pump - $65+ at NAPA Exchange (you have to give them your old one, or its an extra $55)
A/C might just need Servicing because of low coolant. It will NOT RUN if there is low pressure.

I just replaced all the bearings in gearbox and is still sitting with the same irritating noise. I have been reading through some of the comments and find them useful. I have a 2013 Mitsubishi lancer manual transmission, I get a whining noise but only when I accelerate in any gear, irrespective of the speed. I will try replacing the idle pulley and belt this weekend and will let you know how it went.
Hi, it's a manual transmission. And it only does when it is in gear and with your foot on the accelerator and when driving, irrespective of what speed you are doing. When you take your foot off the accelerator it disappears.
