Flashing light shows a car and a keyh inside

We just bought our 2005 toyota avalon. My husband took it out of town and a light came on that says Maintenence Required. We don't have a owner's manual so he thought we would see if it needed a oil change. He got the oil changed and the light continues to stay on, and he said another light came on and it's a flashing car that has a key on the inside of it. What does that mean?

Thank You Very Much for The Maintenance Required Light Info, as far as the flashing car w the key inside. I'm not sure what key we have? When we bought it it only came with one key so we tried to make a duplicate, which ended up not working because we later found out it needs a chip (or probably what I hear as the smart key?) If the light is supposed to be on (and normal) why does it need reset?

    Thank You So Much!

Thanks a Million! One more thing please, why do I did to have my key programed to be a smart key? What's the difference or how did you know what key I had?

I have the same problem. I have a 2008 Toyota Avalon recently purchased and the light came on with a flashing car with a key in it today. What does this mean?

    Thanks,

The flashing car with the key is the security light, this is normal.

To reset the light, you need to tell me if you have a "smart key" or a conventional key; the proceedures are slightly different. Please repost; I can give you the exact proceedure. Thanks for choosing FixYa.

The Maint Reqd light blinks after 4,500 miles, and stays ON continuously after 5,000 miles. This is to remind you that you need an oil change. Give the info from you about your key, you do not have a smart key. You have a transponder key. Off topic, but, FYI, a Toyota dealer can program a transponder key for you.
Back to the Maint Reqd light. Here is how you reset it:
Turn the key on.
Make sure that the odometer reads "ODO", and displays the total mileage traveled...If it displays trip a or trip b, push the black button by the odometer to make the display read ODO.
Turn the key off.
Press and HOLD the black trip reset button until advised to release it.
Turn the key ON. (keep holding th reset button down)
Observe the odometer display.
you will see 5 dashes, 4 dashes, 3 dashes, 2 dashes, 11 dash, followed by five zeros, and the total mileage you started with will re-display.
Release the button.
Turn the key off.

Regarding the flashing light with the car & the key: This is the indicator to show potential theives thatyou vehicle has a sophosticated security system, and it CAN NOT be started by "hot-wiring" it. The flashing light is normal, and consumes no battery power. I hope that this helps you understand these two items better. Thanks for choosing FixYA, and the graciousness of a FixYa rating for my solution to you would be greatly appreciated. Glad to be of assistance; please feel free to call upon me anytime. Have a great day.

Thanks for the FIxYa!. Much Appreciated. Regarding the key, you told me about trying to duplicate it. The "smart key" is not a key at all. It is a small box that the car understands is present. You press a button on the dash and viola, it starts. Everything is done electronically. The program procedure on your key is necessary for the key to "talk" to the ignition lock. If you have a duplicate key, and it is not programmed, it will not start; hence the coolness about the car not being able to be hot-wired/stolen. Only a dealer can reprogram the new keys. BTW, tell your insurance company that you have a transponder system, your rate may be lowered due to this type of security system being present. Have a great day.

"Regarding the flashing light with the car & the key: This is the indicator to show potential thieves that you vehicle has a sophisticated security system" On my 2004 Sienna, there are two of those; one on the dash to the left of the steering wheel, and one to the right of the radio. The one to the right of the radio goes out when the engine is started, as it should, but the one to the left of the steering wheel does not go out. It's staying on all the time now. Anyone know why?

This light acts as a reminder to replace the engine oil.

This light will come on when the ignition key is turned to "ON" and will go off after about a few seconds.

When you drive for about 7200 km (4500 miles) after the engine oil replacement, this light illuminates for about 3 seconds and then flashes for about 12 seconds with the ignition key turned to the "ON" position. If you continue driving without replacing the engine oil, and if the distance driven exceeds 8000 km(5000 miles), the light will come on. The light will remain on thereafter.

If the light is flashing, we recommend that you replace the engine oil at an early opportunity depending on the driving and road conditions. If the light comes on, replace it as soon as possible.

Resetting the system

The system must be reset after the engine oil replacement. Reset the system by the following procedure:

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the "OFF" position with the odometer reading shown.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position while holding down the trip meter reset knob.
Hold down the knob for at least 5 seconds. The odometer indicates "000000" and the light goes off.

If the system fails to reset, the light will continue flashing.

I have a 2005 toyota avalon. the csv light came on along with the check engine light. we recently put new tires on (recommended size) less than 100 miles ago. any ideas on what could set off these alarms

I just had the same problem with my 2001 avalon. AutoZone told me it was code Po171 and the car was running lean. You don't have to take it to the shop right away but don't wait too long. Took it and the mechanic had to clear out the mass air flow on top of the air bonx (sp?). I guess if this vent gets clogged it can strain the engine? Hope this helps!
