Steering column rubbing sound

03 Jaguar S-Type: have a rubbing sound when turning the steering wheel. It is NOT the power steering pump; the noise comes from the steering column in the cockpit. If I don't fix this problem is there a safety hazard associated with it? If it's an air bag problem, what can be done and what is the effort/cost involved?

Had service done yesterday that included topping off all fluids. Mech/tech confirmed that rubbing noise is coming from the steering wheel and suggested pulling it (for $200) then checking to see what was rubbing. I'm thinking about doing that but am not that enthused. Any other suggetions from you experts?

SOURCE: 52 grinding noise from under car . not sure if it

Hi, When a grinding noise is detected first locate the area of the car it is being generated from. Most grinding noises will be being generated while driving, if you are having a hard time detecting the location of the grinding sound, have a helper ride along in the rear seat to give a new perspective on the origin of the grinding noise. A grinding noise can be generated by many things from worn out brake pads to axle bearing failure. Once a grinding sound has been detected action must be prompt. Grinding in most cases is telling you something has failed or is failing. It can be as a result of worn out brake pads or shoes, check your engine and transmission mount, check for axle bearing failure, check your power steering system for leak...

My 2010 Lexus RX350 is making a squeaking/rubbing noise in the steering wheel. It is the electric power steering motor.

electric motors don't make "squeaking/rubbing" noises, they make "whining" noises. as for possible replacement, it depends on how the system is designed.

Rubbing noise in steering column

Omg worn out rotors will not make your steering wheel make rubbing noises. Some ppl should just read and not write. There is a rubber boot that your steering shaft goes through on the fire wall .sometimes it dries out .if you lube it with silicone paste .not petroleum based.it might help.do it from inside the car.under dash .or it might be clock spring .or rotary coupler in steering wheel. You might just try to lube .the hen if it don't work take to dealer.if it don't help.

Unfortunately the mechanic you spoke to was correct, a lot of Ford products had a bad run of power steering pumps. They notoriously leak and causes the pump to whine when steering.

Disconnect steering column down by brake pedals and turn wheel with steering disconnected.....if squeak is still there its in the upper steering column bearings...squirt silicon spray down the top tube [below the steering wheel] until it runs out thru the tube lower bearing.

It sounds like you need to replace it or you can get your power steering pump flushed out and give that a try. As for the rubbing noise I need more info. What are you doing to make it do that noise? Do you know where in the front?

Steering difficult(slow) and a whining noise when turning wheel

The whine is most likely your power steering pump. Check the fluid in the pump. If you are low on power steering fluid you may have a leaking hose or fitting or the seals in the pump may have began leaaking. If you continue to run the auto without power steering fluid you will burn up the power steering pump very quickly.
