Need to change valves steam seal.
There is a leak of engine oil during cool down of the engine. So when you start the cold engine it is burning oil that leak inside the combustion chamber.

Hope it helps.

SOURCE: 2003 gmc 6.6 turbo diesel sometimes smoke a lot

If the smoke is white smoke and you have it after it has run for a while or when you stop at a stop sign or light it is one of two things or possibly both. I have a 2003 GMC 3500 that had the same proble. It turned out to be a combination of Injector being bad and Glowplugs. Injectors are covered up to 200,000 miles but not the glowplugs. I bought 4 glowplugs of the internet for 10.49 a piece AC Delco New. The dealer replaced all 8 injectors and 8 glowplugs. I paind for 4 GP's and the installation 213.00. Truck has more power and NO white smoke you might need to take it to the dealer. The test for the injectors is about 85.00 but well worth the expense

Ford focus tdci white smoke problems

What happening is you have a bad head gasket or its starting to go bad. As long a little oil is getting in to cylinders causing that smoke once it warms up that gasket is expanding thus the smoke stops. I would keep an eye on oil levels if it gets milky replace gasket asap. Could also be intake gasket but highly doubt it this sounds like a worn head gasket.

When I start it up first thing in the morning it blows smoke untill engine is warm. Will I need to get new guide seal? 100 series 4.5ltr petrol

if it is blue smoke it is oil, what is happening is when the engine stands overnight the oil runs down through the valve seals & into the cylinders hence the smoke when you first start the engine you will most likely need to recondition the head ( new valve guides & seals plus a valve grind) it may be cheaper to fit a reconditioned head.....hope this helps.....cheers

My kia sportage diesel is puffing blue smoke.

Nothing to fix friend. See, in diesel, when cold, there is an electric plunger on the throttle that speeds the idle a bit till warm up. Connected to that same wire is the cold start/temperature sensor. When cold/cool this sensor will excite the plunger to speed the idle, and put more fuel into the engine making the smoke you see, until warm up is reached and the sensor shuts down. You really don't have a repair needed friend.

Blue smoke on startup warm engine

If you have a turbo, a shaft seal may be leaking some oil. Otherwise, the valve seals may be hard or worn enough to pass some oil during 'off' time. As long as it smokes only at startup, there is probably little to worry about until it begins smoking all of the time--then it will be time to replace the leaking seals which can be done without removing the heads. You might try a seal-softener additive in the oil or use 'high mileage' oil which contains seal softener. It also helps loosen sticking rings as well. Hope this helps.

1997 Saturn SL1 very hard to start

jlwhelen,
I will suggest that perhaps the blue smoke is not purely oil. It sounds like you may have an ignition problem where the engine has a hard time firing until warmed. The blue smoke may be, at least in part, unspent fuel. I realize that a warm engine that uses oil will smoke blue, but excessively rich conditions on startup can result in a similar effect. If the choke circuit is delivering a little extra fuel from a dirty injector, the problem may be worse when starting from cold.
To remedy this, I would suggest a simple replacement of plugs and wires, as well as a fuel injector cleaner through the tank. I would bet money that these simple maintenance points would solve your problem.

Good luck!

1992 gmc sierra turbo diesel starts and idles fine until warm up

It's time for a Italian tune up!

The blue smoke can be one of two thing.

oil drop from the valve stem (from engine head to cyclinders)
or
diesel soot collect inside the exhaust system.

===
I will take a 5-10 minutes high rpm (not redline) ran on the highway.
Pay close attention to the rear view mirror and look for black diesel soot.
=== I will use Diesel Cleen or similar product to condition the fuel. (keep moisture down)
Use the recommended amount of SEAFOAM oil additive to condition the valve stem seal/rubber parts.

I can not rule out excessive blown by.
Can you get a diesel compression tester?
When was the last valve adjustment?

Please post the actual odometer on the engine and I will follow up on it.

Smoke

If the smoke is blue and goes away after it warms up and the engine runs fine. It's most likely your valve guild are worn, they are common to let oil run in to the piston chambers when the engine has been parked for a few hours and most notice when parked over night. Nothing to loose sleep over, good luck

1998 leganza motor smokes when it warms up

If the smoke is white, or steam it is water. you might have cracked the head or warped it. Did you get it looked at before you put the new gasket on? If the smoke is black then it is oil. Do a compression check and see if you don't have a bad cylinder. They should all be about the same give or take 5 lbs.

Nissan 300zx starts smoking when reaches tempture

sounds like your rings are leaking oil into the cylinder.. causes blue smoke. would not do it until it is warm due to the higher viscosity of the oil at cold. try some ring seal and see if that reduces it.
