I have 02 sentra with a 1.8. It has been dying randomly from about idol it seems like. Very random sometimes it will do it and then not do it for a couple days. It starts right back up after it dies and there is no codes that have came up.
Its possible, that you crank angle sensor is failing. Also, that vehicle had a issue with the ECM/computer. Nissan put a set of foams inside of the ECM box to prevent the ECM from movement, however the glue that they used to attach the foams was causing the ECM to fail. The vapors from the glue would eat up vital circuits inside the computer causing failuer. I would go to your local dealer and provide them with your VIN nujber. With the VIN number, thay can check to ysee if the foam campaign has been doen and also the crank and cam angle sensor camaign. Nissan volunteraly replaced cam and crank angle sensors if the VIN number matches the campaign. Your ECM/computer is covered for 8years or 80000 miles. We are also starting to see timing chains getting stretched causing running issues, but you will have a "check engine light on" for cam angle sensor circuit. Anyhow, go to your local friendly NIssan dealer and have them run your VIN number to see if you have any open campaigns (crank and cam sensors, ECM foam etc.) Good luck and let me know what you find.
My sentra (2002) did the same thing. Nissan shop claims it is a blown head gasket.

Our 2002 Sentra XE 1.8 has been doing the same thing, I've just had all recalls fixed Crank & Cam Sensors and the ECM foam taken out. Our car still sometimes will randomly sputter on the road then come back...No CEL comes on...I've taken it to the Nissan Dealer they couldn't find the problem when doing the recalls, another technician also said nothing was coding up on the computer. I've changed out the spark plugs, I've put a new coil on plug on Cylinder 3 which my technician suggested cause he said it was arching between the spark-plug and the plug wall...That seemed to have helped for a couple of days but then the problem came back...I'm starting to think about a new car almost have spent enough for a down payment - with no good answers as to what is going on. If anyone knows please post!
