The temperature gauge goes up then back down... hasnt run extremely hot yet... going to get the thermostat checked... anything else that might be the problem?
The temp. gauge started going up and down incrementally from the half way point up to about three quarters. I have no external leaks. I topped off the coolant. There are no error codes. The fans both come on. My next step may be thermostat or radiator flush. Any suggestions? The temp. gauge started going up and down incrementally from the half way point up to about three quarters. either a heat switch is not switching heat to the compartment or else the thermostat in the cooling system is defective. when it is not open it does not let hot water to the internal heating system, has your engine been overheating or running hot? also as this would be a symtom.
CHECK COOLANT SENSOR WIRE CONNECTOR MAKE SURE ITS ON TIGHT NOT DAMAGED.IF ALL IS GOOD.YOUR COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR BAD CAUSING THE COOLING FAN NOT TO COME ON.
Ensure your cooling system is full.
With the engine at operating temperature feel the heater hoses going into the firewall. They should both be warm.
If all that is ok inspect the heater temperature door. The door that operates when the heater valve is actuated.
Since your blower is working and it is a heat issue, thats where we'll
start,First thing is have you checked the coolant level in the radiator when
engine is cold, make sure it is filled to top, next verify you have coolant in
reserve ,Start your van and get it up to normal operation temperature,If your
heat gauge on the dash works correctly it should be 190 degrees,Now lift the
hood and locate the two heater hoses going into the heater assembly at the fire
wall,Both hoses should be hot to hold on to,if both are hot and no heat inside
your problem will be the blend air door in heater assembly. if neither hose
is that hot you need to replace the thermostat in the engine to get it up to 195
degrees. if one hose is hot and one is luke warm then the heater core is
blocked and to blame. hope this helps you.
Make sure when you add coolant to system, that you have heater running while filling it and be sure to bleed all air out of system. Keep a real close eye on coolant level for a while as you may have caused worse damage, and if you keep having to add coolant. It would also be smart to change thermostat before refilling system, but if not, keep a close eye on temperature gauge for a while to make sure it doesn't go too high, or jump erratically from cold to hot, indicating faulty thermostat. Check oil often as well.
Radiators do not "go out". They leak or they don't... that's it. You wasted money changing a radiator if you aren't loosing coolant. The thermostat (~$10) is all you needed to change.
