Putting a 03 4cy motor in a 00 dodge neon

You are guessing and guessing is expensive. You need an auto-electrician with a pro grade scan tool computer. The electronics diagnostics with give the answer to what failed when you went into reverse. I'll give you a guess, it is something on the gearbox, or a computer network failure between it, the BCM and ECM.

This vehicle certainly has some issues.

Check the 3 motor mounts and 1 transmission mount. As they wear out the motor is allowed to shift and vibrate. Be sure to use only original dodge products though,as the cheaper ones won't last a year. This happened to me. I hope this helps.

Double check that you didn't unplug something in the mount change or a ground wire left off a bolt on the mount.

I lost you, stupid computer. Anyhow there are 8 different engines for the dodge colt in the early 1990's I can only assume its the 1.4L, 1.5L or 2.4L. The 1.4L & 1.5L the timing marks are exactly the same. The Cam points to 3:00 marks ther. The crank points almost straight up, slightly to the right, mark on engine cover. The 2.4L has 3 marks, The crank has an alignment mark at approximately 10:00, the cam sprocket points straight up at 12:00 and the idler pulley (to the right of crank shaft pulley) points approximately 11:00. They should all have a notch or mark when aligned. The short secondary belt, the crankshaft should be in the same location 10:00 and the balance shaft (to the left) should be at 9:00. This goes on after of course. Rotate engine 2 full revolutions and recheck marks before starting engine.

Change the cam sensor. I had the same problem you did and once i change this little sensor, car started right up!

the tone wheel on crankshaft is different in the 03 engine..slots are cut different for next generation controller(03)..the 2000 controller will not recognize these slots properly..i don't think you can remove tone wheel from 2000 crankshaft and put on 03..start looking for another engine..i would say a 1997-2002..has to have crank sensor above oil filter..i hope this helps
