is your engine turbo charged? if so go for turbo charger or the waste gate valve not working and do not allow the engine emission to flow easily. also for the black smoke sometimes you might have a clogged air filter, tight engine valves( if are adjustable ).
85% of the diesel engine problem is the fuel system. and rest 15%, if met, is a major problem. you have to check the filter. and make the fuel line solid. means no air in the system.
The problem is with the injectors, they are over fueling, causing diesel knock when cold, denso have modified injectors with what they call step 2 , there is also a ecu software update for this concern.
with key off hold odometer button in while continuing holding button in turn key to the on position release button when fuel light goes out then pushing button in again gives you a series of numbers from 1 - 20 set to 15 (150000km's) and hold button in again until T-Belt light goes out.
The cruiser as long as its the turbo diesel, direct injection (4.2td), be aware though that this model has inherent "sag" with the IFS suspension, so if buying secondhand then upgrade the torsion bars(and factor this into your buying price).
