You have to remove the inner door panel to access the exterior handle's mounting nuts. Once you have the panel off, there will be a plastic film, or water shield, that you can peel off far enough to reach the handle ( when done, reseal the plastic with a little adhesive).. The handle is usually held in place by just two nuts which you remove, then disconnect the latch rod from the handle, and pull the old handle off. Attach the rod to the new handle, tighten the attaching nuts, and put everything back together. Getting the door panel off is the hardest part of this job.
Good luck.

If you remove the inner door panel of the door there will be plastic weather shield covering most of the door. Use a hair dryer or heat gun to heat the weather shield up and slowly peel it away. There will be 2 (10mm I believe) bolts on the inside of the door panel to release the handle (have someone catch it from the other side). To re-install simply connect he handle rod and 2 bolts then place the door panel back on and your done. A word of advice is be gentle with the door panel so not to damage the door pins or crack the plastic. Taking your time can be fun when learning a car ;).

The Door Panel Has Got To Be Removed.
Start By Removing The Handle Cover You Mentioned On The Handle Careful Not To Break It . A Small Screwdriver Can Help.
Next Remove Black Piece By The Window By Pulling It Strait Outward. Then Remove The Screw Cover On The Actual Handle You Use To Close The Door. Remove The Screw From Below It And There Is One Under The Front Edge Of It As Well. There is 2 screw along the bottom edge of the door as well. then remove screw up by the mirror. now remove this little plastic clip right on the side closest to the outer edge by pressing the center and pulling the whole thing out. Then There Are 2 10mm screw that hold on the door latch remove and slide the whole handle forward and it should come free. Now Reverse all these steps with the new handle in place.
THIS SEEMS HARDER THEN IT IS I PROMISE.

SOURCE: To remove the interior door panel of a 1996 Toyota camry so that
My 96 Camry LE has 9 attachments that are visible. Some have plastic caps covering the screws; others do not. There are screws at the door handle, at the forward portion(with covers) when the door is open and the back edge (small covers). As I recall, there are several friction type fasteners around the perimiter of the panel that can be removed by prying carefully away from the metal portion of the door to free up the trim panel. Once these are loose, the trim around the inside door release handle (the one you pull to open the door) can be pryed in a backward motion. Then the entire panel can be removed by pulling upward and backward at the same time (it easier to do this with the window down). Then it is a matter of disconnecting the wires attached to the various controls for the electric windows and door locks to free up the panel itself. There is probably a plastic skin covering the metal portion of the door. Carefully pull that away to expose the inner workings of the door latch mechanisim. The rest of the procedure should become easy to figure out. I have not removed the exterior door handle itself; but it is a simple mechanism as I recall. Best of luck to you.
