Front tank fuel pump was replaced by previous owner. The week after I bought it the high pressure pump on the frame failed and was replaced. When switched to front tank, gauge always shows just above empty. When switched to rear tank, gauge will peg out to past full until driven for awhile then drop down to just above empty, like the front tank??? HELP!
You just have a ground problem between the frame and tank ground. It has to be connected to a clean tab on the tank at the fuel sending unit. Check and clean them, both tanks. It gets confused and don't know what to do without a complete circuit.
Hi, The only help I can state for certain is that it is an electrical problem, but sorry I cannot be more specific. Please send me feedback to [email protected] Thanks Malcolm Campbell.
SOURCE: Fuel Gauge not working
The switch that you use to change tanks is probably faulty - the switch supplies power for the sending unit in the tank, and to the transfer switch for the gas lines - use a meter to check it

I'd look for a bad or broken ground somewhere, either feeding both tanks, or the gauge itself, but start at the sending units and see if there is a common ground wire coming forward & joining into one.
SOURCE: Fuel leaks from rear tank to front.
The leaking from one tank to another was covered by a recall from Ford. Not sure if they still foot the bill for installation of the required check valves. These are still available from the dealership. The rear one is the hardest to install. The check valve can be installed without pulling the rear tank. As for your front sender I would clean all of the connections to the sender and make sure it has a decent ground. If it still only reads at the 1/4 tank level you will have to replace the sender to rectify the problem.

Both tanks have their own pumps in it, one doesn't have to be working for the other to work. The fuel cut off switch is on the passenger side kick panel (where the front passengers right foot would rest). I'm not 100% sure where the relay is located on your truck but i think it is in the under hood fuse block. Are you sure it's a fuel delivery issue? Have you checked fuel pressure? Are you getting spark? Do you hear the fuel pump come on? If you've determined it is a fuel delivery problem and can't hear the pump turn on, using a digital voltmeter measure the voltage between the two thicker wires on the fuel pump connector. You should have battery voltage for a few seconds after the key is turned on and while cranking. If you don't, check the black wire for a good ground with an ohmmeter. If that's good you'll have to start tracing the power wire back and determine the fault.

THANK YOU! I couldn't understand why gauge is faulty for both tanks since the front pump and sending unit are new. I will check out these suggestions today.
