Truck overheats when towning up hill only. I have already replace Head studs, Head gasket kit, EGR, Oil Cooler, new injectors and injector control module. Fan clutch is now kicking on when truck starts to overheat, so I replaced fan clutch, thermostat and flushed radiator. Took truck for test driver towing trailer and it still overheat. Problem is most likely the water pump.Have seen several of these doing this on the 5.4L. Impeller fins were damaged on the ones that I have seen.

I have had this happen with my ranger. Changed everything I could to try to fix the over heating. It turned out that I had a small leak in my head gasket and it was allowing exsaust gas to go into the cooling system witch was over pressurizing it. Also the air from the exsaust will heat up much faster than liquid making your thermostat to read hot and will not be able to blow hot air in the cab because there is no liquid going to the heater core. This happened to me when my blet came off and I tryed to make it home. If you had it over heat for a long peirod of time it may have ripped the head gasket.

Check the dealer's website. They should be able to tell you the towing rate.

If the engine is not over heating then it is doing its job. The constant cycling is based on the temp of the air traveling through the radiator and the a/c condenser not the outside temp so much. The start up high rev is just how these clutches work in ford fans. It sounds like it is operating correctly.
