The problem with engine check lights is that they need to be read by a special scan tool to find out what codes are present, which hopefully steer the mechanic in the right direction for diagnosis and repair. Unfortunately there could be 50 or more reasons why the check light would illuminate, so this needs to be checked by a workshop with the right test gear for your vehicle. Get them to just do a code test and give you an estimate on repair costs if price is a concern, and give you a printout of the codes present. You can take this printout to a couple of workshops and get a few estimates if you want. I recommend choosing the place that appears the most professional and friendly, rather than the cheapest, or some balance between those factors.
