When switching from cold air to hot air the heat does not come on. Also in the spring time when switching from heat to cold air we have a similar problem. The few times we have had success we were persistent in switching it back and forth and it would work. What could be the problem?
The galant heater problem is the temp acuator. That is the clicking sound your hearing. It is trying to work but it needs to be replaced. Mine has done the same thing. Its up under the dash almost directly behind the stereo. I had mine replaced for about 200. That included the part.
I do have another problem now though. I can't switch from vent to floor to defrost. It is stuck between floor/vent and defrost/floor. Cant drive in cold cuz defrost does not blow hard enought to keep window clear. Mechanic told me heater box warped and be about 2500 to fix. I call bs on this. Does anyone else have this problem?
I found I had to burp the coolant system on my 2001 Montero. Wait til its cool, remove the radiator cap, remove the bleed bolt/screw above the thermostat (just above the gooseneck attached to the return radiator hose) start the engine add antifreeze slowly. Watch the air bubbles come out out the bleed hole. I added about a gallon (surprised it took so much) Replace the bolt (be careful not to over tighten, I broke mine and had to drill out the bolt with a left twist drill bit). Again top off the radiator and replace the cap. The whole procedure should take about 30 minutes or so. Mine is now working like a champ.

Your problem is on the cable that full the heater door actuator or the actuator itself. try to look under close to accelerator pedal while turning the knob of the heater control.see if the cable is pulling the door actuator.if not... either the clips that is holding the cable is misplace or out of hook. otherwise you've got to replace the actuator which is a common problem on this car.they where all made of plastic gear.
goodluck!!

I have this same prob. I have a 2002 mitsubishi galant gtz, and this is one of many problems i have had! During the summer the air is GREAT. when i change from cold to hot it may work for a while but then i hear a loud rattle like a leaf or something is stuck in the dash. This is when the heat will quit working. It does blow out air but it's not hot. Then sometimes I will be riding down the road and hear the sound again and the heat will start working. I was told that it is the actuator? where is this located on the car?
I have the exact same problem, noises, cold air, no hot air. It came and went for a year and now the hot air is gone completely, no more noises. I took it in for service and received a quote to fix for $1,000. Were you able to resolve, if so, can I ask what the charges were?
2002 Galant air is perfect but heater is blowing cold air. My mechanic poured drano in the colloign system to see if it wd unclog and it didnt. Then he proceeds to tell me I need a heater core. Another mechanic told me someone cracked a little tube that leads to heator core and needs to replace the heater core. There is no leak and I dont smell anything. Last yeear the heater worked until jiffy lube got angry and did siomething to my car. After they changed the oil the telp in the car rocketed to HOT. Then I changed the thermostat still no heat and after abt 1 month the temperature started to rise again. Then they bypassed the Hot temp witout checkign the thermostat maybe they put it in wrtong. Anyway I went to another mechanic and I told him I might need heater core and he saaid yes. I dont think I need One.Last year when I turn the control to heat it cranked then the moise disappeared. Seemed everytime the switch was turned rapidly it would click da da da before it gave heat. Anyway I dont know what to do 800.00 is alot money but I need heat. The windows do get foggy but the cold defogger works. HELPPPPPPPP
Have the same problem. Someone said it's the control unit, tried a used one, not the problem. On to the next step that I see could be it. There is a circuit board under the dash controls for the heat/ac. I'll try this and let you all know.
I have the same problem. I have a 2002 Mitsubishi Galant. I have brought it to the dealer two times and had the problem fixed both times, but the problem comes back each time. The problem is starting up again. It begins as an intermittent problem, the blower works but it only sends out cold air. Once I turn off the car and park it and then the next time I start it up the heat will work, eventually, though it will not work at all. The last time they fixed it they said the cable was kinked, wonder how that happened, odd problem. This time I brought it in before it went out completely and they can't figure it out. I have an arrangement that if it doesn't work and it's convenient for me to come by and have them look at it before I turn off the car I will, but as you can imagine this is going to be a bit of a challenge.
This is frustrating and if several of us have this problem it seems like Mitusbishi should figure out whats wrong and issue a recall.
