2002 mercury mountaineer had a grinding noise when i backed up and turned the wheel to the right, I took it to the ford dealer and they said my transfer case, tie rod on one side and my brakes and bearings were bad. $3000.00 later the car drives worse than it did and the shop can't find anything wrong with it now it makes the grinding noise on a regular basis. Anyone know what it might be since Ford can't figure it out?

Take it to another dealer or take it back and have them fix it right or get your money back, if they refuse contact Ford customer service, they really frown on this poor quality repair work, once they say it is fixed and it is not they in no uncertain terms "bought the job" How do I know this? I worked for a Ford dealer for 25 years.

I would take it back and tell them you just spent 3k and they didn't fix it. And you dont feel it should cost you anymore for them to fix it. If it is making a noise how can they say there is nothing wrong? Could be as simple as a brake backing plate rubbing the brake rotor. It may have got bent slightly when they replaced the bearings and other parts.

SOURCE: '03 Merc Mountaineer humming noise when turning

If same tires as before & air pressure set correctly, or as usual, a humming when swerving, or turning one way or the other or both, it's usually a pretty good indicator.

sounds like tire rub issue, as inflating tire solved the issue for a short while possibly that the tires placed on vehicle maybe incorrect size width/height, check tire size, look in wheel well for areas of possible rubbing.

A grinding noise when turn while i am drving

If this is happening only when you are makinjg a turn, the chances are that the metal-on-metal sound is a failing wheel bearing. This needs to be replace before serious damage occurs and a very costly failure occurs.
