WHen it does start, it runs fine, but sometimes it takes 5-19 minutes trurning the key in the ignition again and again before it catches.

Have you checked for spark out of the spark plug wires and out of the coil wire? Also, I would recommend checking for battery voltage at the coil. If your crank sensor and engine electronics (DME) are ok, I would suspect the secondary ignition components. Also, don't rule out a bad rotor button or cap. Make sure you do not have any oil inside the distributor cap.

Then your right! The word zapping sound. A starter description would of been a clinking noise. Yes you do require a ignition switch that the eletrical part of it. Best of luck to you
