2000 Chevy Impala - Temperature gauge goes into the red quickly. had cooling fan assembly replaced 2 months ago because car temperature gauge used to go into the red and sometimes stall. Two months and $1,200 later, the temperature gauge now goes way into the red after 10 minutes on the road and the warning light rings. My boyfriend and a neighbor looked at the coolant - they said it could probably use some, and the color it is now is brownish, which they say mean it's dirty. The car doesn't stall, but I'm afraid to keep it running. Any chance I can diagnose and fix this with their help instead of a mechanic? I really can't afford this right now! Thanks so much.

The cost to repair the head gasket problem is $1000.00, you said you had money issues, so I am sorry to deliver the bad news on this. Of course get my opinion confirmed by a local shop before tearing the engine apart to replace the head gaskets.

Thanks so much, Dennis - but why did you say "sorry" - is it that bad? What do I do about it, and how much would it cost?

It could be the thermostat but you need to check the fluid level and for any leaks (these could even be pin hole) first. If you have one of those infra-red temperature gauges you can check the temperature of the cooling system in the engine bay to double check. Generally the engine temperature should not go much about 90 deg C - this is when the electric cooling fans kick in - are these turning on?

2004 Impala ls temperature dash gauge

fans came late on those car, like 212 and second fan comes on at 224,you reprogram it to come a lot sooner,,other thing is there might be gunk inside the block, and coolant has hard time to pass through, and staying longer than enough in block temp goes high, even tough the radiator is doing it's job,it is just coming out block lot hotter than it suppose to be,and gauge read the block not the radiator

Check your coolant levels. If the temperature isn't much higher than normal, you may be fine, or you may have a Coolant Temperature Sensor going bad, and reporting the incorrect temperature. Even though the thermostat was replaced 8 months ago, it is possible it is already going bad again. I believe this is more of a Coolant Temp. Sensor fault though. The cooling fans are On when the AC is on. With the AC off, the cooling fans come on when the engine reaches a certain temperature, and cut off once the temperature is back in range. The Coolant Temperature sensor shouldn't cost much, and is easy to replace. I would start with that, top it off with coolant, and then maybe change the thermostat.

You probably need to bleed the cooling system properly.

Open the cooling system bleeder screws.

Slowly fill the cooling system with a 50/50 coolant mixture until coolant runs freely out of bleeder screws.
Close the cooling system bleeder screws
Install the coolant pressure cap
Start the engine.
Run the engine at 2,000 - 2,500 RPM until the engine reaches normal operating temperature. (midway on gauge)
Allow the engine to idle for 3 minutes.
Shut the engine off.
Allow the engine to completely cool.
Top off the coolant as necessary.
Run engine again at 2000 - 2500 RPM until the engine reaches normal operating temperature.
Allow engine to idle until cooling fans come on. It should come on with the gauge about 3/4 of the way to red. - if it gets to where is touches the red, shut down immediately.
When the fan comes on, put your hand behind the fan and observe the temperature of the air coming from the fan. It should feel hot. If it is blowing cold air, the coolant is not circulating through the radiator like it should. This could be caused by lots of things including an improper/defective thermostat, corroded water pump impeller, or a blown head gasket.

NON-FUNCTIONING COOLING FANS BUT ALL FUSES INTACT; SUGGESTIONS? FLUID IS FULL, NO STEAM OR SHUDDER BUT TEMP GAUGE OVER RED

get your temperature censor(s) replaced. this will cause the fan to not come on if it is not functioning properly. usually the temp censor is somewhere that it can have coolant running on it so it can read the temperature on your car. your car will have one for the gauge and another one to turn the fan on and send signals to your ECM i suggest you replace both.
