Windshield wipers stopped working with heavy snow cover

We had a heavy snowfall last night and I turned the windshield wipers on before I cleared the snow. They went up halfway and stopped working. I cleared the snow, checked the fuse, restarted the car and they slowly came back to life. While driving to work all the snow on my roof melted and slid down onto the windshield. Wipers died again. Obviously, the Kia doesn't like heavy snow. If I am fastidious about snow removal in the future will this resolve the problem? Or should I take the car to the dealer? I bought the car used within the last month, and other than this problem, love the car.

The windshield wiper circuit has an circuit breaker in it, under heavy load this breaker trips to protect the wiper motor, when the motor cools, the breaker resets automatically restoring proper wiper action.

Rear Windshield Wiper

Richard there should be a 12mm nut at the base of the wiper arm. Pull up on a cover to expose it. Position the wiper where it should be for the rest position, Then tighten the nut and try it again.

After a heavy snowfall, I turned on the windshield wipers and now they don't work.Yes I had heavy snow on the windshield

Check for a blown fuse. With the heavy snow, the blades probably were prevented from moving which would have caused the wiper motor to overheat and blow a fuse.

see if the transmission arms for the wiper motor are moving when the wiper motor is on. The bolts that hold the arms to the motor may be loose or stripped out from the heavy know. The threads for these bolts are thin and don't take much to strip.

My windshield wipers stopped working after a big snow storm. (1997 Jeep Cherokee)

You should check your fuses first. What may of happened is that the wiper motor could be frozen if the wiper arms are frozen in ice. Another thing that may of happened is that the wipers were used to clear the windshield instead of clearing it manually. When that is done if there is too much snow or it is a heavy snow the wiper motor will burn up or go bad due to the fact that it does not have enough power to do such things.
