2003 Hyundai Sonata Door Lock Problem

The remote will unlock doors and open trunk but will not lock the doors. I tried both remotes and had the same problem.

Just the passenger side backseat door lock does not lock or unlock with the fob or driver door control. If is open, it will remain open and if locked, it will remain locked unless I manually lock or unlock it. Does the 5 yr / 60K warranty cover it?

I had this problem. Through some research and asking some service personnel I found out it is a fairly easy fix. You will need to buy a new relay switch for the door locks. The dealer will/should know what you need. They are located (two of them, buy two and replace both) on the back side of the fuse box. It is not that easy to get back there. I had to lay on my back with my head up under the instrument panel. They are visible and can be removed if you take some time and be careful. Once I knew what I was looking at, it was easy to replace and the remote works like a charm. You can go to an auto supply, like Autozone, and they should have a schematic to show you where these relays are.

Thank you very much for this solution fun2fly. The service guys did not know how to solve the problem, but following your solution I found online also the electric scheme, went to eBay and bought the relay (for $ 9.90) and convinced the service guys to do just as you said. It was solved in 10 seconds, just as much the service guy needed to reach and replace the relay. Fantastic, thank you FixYa, too!

I was able to remove the 2 door lock relays, by lowering the plastic panel around the dashboard. Reaching in above the fusebox, i was able to pull the relays out. They were tight. I had to wiggle them a bit until they came out. Took the relay covers off, and cleaned the contacts with a narrow piece of thin cardboard, which seemed to polish a bit of black residue off the contacts. Now the key fob is working a lot better.

I own a 2005 NF 3.3ltr Sonata Elite. The vehicle has only traveled 47,000 kilometers. The problem is the door locking mechanism seems to have an intermittent locking/unlocking fault or the computer is at fault.

Once the door locks are activated by remote or on the door consol, the rear passenger door will lock and stay locked for minutes, days or weeks, it cannot be opened externally or internal by any means. Also other door/doors will not lock at random.

Hyundai have replaced two actuators including the main unit in the driver’s door but the problem continues randomly on various doors.

Hyundai customer service in Australia (NSW) said it is not possible to repair faults that cannot be seen or tested by the dealership, so unless it happens and some else witnesses it from the dealership it wont be dealt with, plus it is apparently not consider a safety issue????

Is not a car door considered an escape hatch and therefore makes it a safety problem or the vehicle unroadworthy

SOURCE: My 2003 Hyundai Sonata Door locks will not lock using

I have exactly the same problem. Keyfob will unlock the doors, but will only arm the alarm once the doors have been locked manually. Central locking button on driver side door no longer works, but I hear the clicking sound you're referring to.
I took it to a mechanic, and he seemed pretty sure it was a bad master window / door lock switch. The price he quoted to replace it was $255 plus tax, and I could never bite the bullet and pay for the work, so I've just been living with the problem.

Yes, I would rule out a fuse or relay, because the other locks work. It would not have a separate fuse and relay for that one door. Probably is the motor, as the body shop advised.

All my remotes won't unlock passenger doors, why?

this is a problem that can appear after your car battery died, cause the car didn't reset propely, so taking the battery out and putting it back in or letting your car die again would do the trick. I tried a lot of reprogramming procedured for my remote key, none of them worked, what did the trick though was simply unlocking the doors via the all door unlock button on the passenger side door, so simple.

I have a 2003 Hyundai Elantra. The remote locks the doors but sometimes it won't unlock the doors. I have to go to the passenger side, press lock on the remote, then press unlock (I can hear the 'clicks'...

Possible issue with the remote controller unit - main board or sub assemblies. The intermittent behavior seems to indicate that the board is erratic to detect at the same time the individual locks work at times.
So make sure all the connectors to the door and to the main board controller are tight. You can remove the main unit and check for any loose connections or clogging, specially water in all the door units or in main unit. If so dry and test.
Otherwise the main unit is a suspect.
