Typically in the fuse box under the hood. Your owners manual or the inside of the lid of the fuse box will often show which relay controls what.

SOURCE: my truck wont start

Pull the small wire off the relay and have someone else turn the key to start position and check for voltage on that small wire, if there is no voltage present your problem may be the ignition switch mounted on the colum under the dash.

SOURCE: 2002 mercury mountaineer 4.0 starter relay location

The power distribution box is
located in the engine compartment.
The power distribution box contains
high-current fuses that protect your
vehicle’s main electrical systems
from overloads.
The starter relay is in position #56 of that box.

SOURCE: Where is starter relay on 1996 Buick LeSabre?

it should be in the under hood fuse box... a relay looks like a 1"x1" cube (most are black in color)... it has 4 or 5 prongs on the bottom.... the fuse box cover should have a diagram on it (or in it)

2001 chevy tahoe want start i just replaced the starter and nothing happened

Probably should check to see if there is power going down threw the small wire on the starter solenoid when the key is turned to the start position, that be a good place to start. Double check the battery cables, make sure they are in good shape, clean and tight. If there is no power to the small wire on the starter solenoid, it may be the starter relay, or even an ignition switch.

1998 chev 1500, 5.0, automatic trany. Why do I have to activate the starter relay by hand to get engine to start?

Have you used a different relay ? Look on the bottom of the relay ,see pin 86 ? Test for B+ voltage where it plugs into the relay / fuse box while someone turns the key to start ! Is there B+ voltage . Before replacing the ignition switch and the neutral safty switch did you test for battery voltage coming from the ignition switch ? Pin 85 goes to ground , you can check this with a ohm meter . Do you know how to use a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter ? In the start position voltage from the ignition switch goes through 10 amp crank fuse . Fuse #8 located in the I/P fuse box .

Why wont vehicle turn over

Is the anti-theft light lit ? Is the starter relay good ? Do you know what a relay is ? Are the battery cables good ? I would start will the starter relay circuit's if the anti-theft light is not lit.! The starter relay along with the starter relay diode is located in the battery junction box in the engine compartment. The relay is K-22 . If you pull out the relay an look on the bottom of the relay you should see four sets of numbers 30,87 an 85 ,86 . If you take a jumper wire (12-14 gage ) an jump pins 30 an 87 if the battery cables & connections are good the starter will crank . Pin's 85 &86 are the control side of the relay . One of these comes from the ignition switch when is start position an the other goes through the transmission range sensor (park neutral switch) To ground or the PCM if yours has a V-8 . Now if when you jump pins 30 & 87 an nothing happens you have bad connections or the battery cable is bad . You can go on youtube an check out videos on voltage drop testing the starter circuit .

My GMC safari 2004 has been blowing Ignition 1 fuse (40 amps) at the moment I turn key to start position, even without starter disconnected it blowed but i replaced the fuse and i removed the starter r

The problem could be a shorted park netual safety switch . Do you know what a wiring diagram is ? It shows all the componets involved in a electrical circuit ! You IGN.1 fuse 40amp , GM calls it IGN A fuse 40 amp . It feeds the ignition switch and pin 30 at the starter enable relay .When you turn the key to the start position it sends B+ voltage to #8 crank fuse , located in the I/P fuse box ,from there it goes to the park netual safety switch , to pin 86 or 85 of the starter enable relay ! If you pull the relay out of the fuse box an look on the bottom you will see this four set's of numbers ,30,87 & 85 ,86 You can test at the fuse box where the relay plugs in . Here is a video on how to test . The guy presenting the video uses a horn circuit , but it works the same way . It happens a lot , the park netual safety switch shorting out . It may or may not be the problem . VEHICLE RELAYS Operation Diagnosis
Here is a web site for free wiring diagrams
http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html Enter your vehicle info . then under system click on engine , then under subsystem click on starting . Then click on the search button an a link will pop up , click on it .You will see all the componets , connections , wiring colors etc... for the starter circuit for your vehicle .

It only clicks when i turn the key, jump to the

Probably a faulty starter motor, try putting the positive jumper directly on the large terminal on the starter motor and hot wireing from the smaller starter terminal to the positive side of your battery. This completely bypasses the rest of the ignition system and , if the starter still dosn't work , the problem is definitely the starter.
Don't forget to disconnect the battery before removing the starter.
Once the starter is out, check the contacts in the solenoid, this is a common problem or the brushes in the actual motor.

1989 volvo 740 gl. Put new starter in, now it

i cannot remember but i think there is a starter relay, its located in the engine bay the wire color is the same as its is on the starter motor, and feeds back to the relay, in the relay box in engine bay if this model dont have the relay as some models did not have it fitted and it was a straight from the ignition it can cross over on the ignition switch, and that would need to be replaced, or changed to button press, were by cutting the wire on the starter wire on the ignition and feeding it to a switch button.
