That happened to my '95 OLDS Aurora... Turned out to be 1&2 gear shift solenoid had "popped" out. He replaced new solenoids and a factory patch kit and ****** shifts like brand new. Hope that helps you cause that was less than 10% the cost of a new/rebuilt transmission!

SOURCE: automatic transmission is stuck in 2nd gear (limp mode)

most newer vehicles  have transmission control modules, that go to a default of 2nd or 3rd gear when they go bad!  I had a 91 plymouth stuck in 3rd gear because of this module! could be your problem!    when mine went out, it smelled like something electrical burned inside the the passenger cabin! I would check all the electrical connections on the transmission first    good luck

SOURCE: 2002 Chrysler Town and Country limp mode

Hello, I have the same problem with my 2002 neon. I was told it was the solenoid pack. I purchased one on eBay (the garage want around $200) for $88. I also bought on eBay the input and output VSS(vehicle speed sensors) for $25 for both. Autozone has these sensors for $27 each. I am going to replace these parts in a day or so to see if it helps.I dont have a garage and its cold outside here in West Virginia. I have also been told to check the ground straps to make sure they are getting good connections. They are located at the starter. I will let you know how this turns out for me when I do the repairs. I have been reading many forums where others are having the same problems. If you have learned anything from your experience please let me know.
Thank you,Dave

SOURCE: 94 Lebaron GTC 2nd gear limp in mode

It has an electical problem. You need to take it to the dealership if you want it diagnosed correctly. It will need to be in limp in, and don't turn the car off as this is clearing the code out of the computer. Leave it running, tell the service advisor your situation and not to turn it off till someone can hook the scan tool to it. This will give them the cause of limp in, and should be able to be resolved after.

All I do is disconnect the negative from the battery to clean it and I put it right back on in my truck is in limp mode and I don't know how to get it off

Disconnecting the battery can sometimes cause the vehicle's computer to reset, which can result in it entering "limp mode" to protect the engine and transmission. This mode is designed to limit the vehicle's speed and power to prevent further damage until the underlying issue is resolved.
To get your truck out of limp mode, you may need to reset the vehicle's computer by following these steps:
  1. Turn off the engine and remove the key from the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the battery terminals (both the positive and negative cables).
  3. Touch the positive and negative cables together (away from the battery) to discharge any remaining energy in the system.
  4. Wait for at least 15 minutes before reconnecting the battery terminals (first the positive and then the negative).
  5. Start the engine and see if the limp mode has been resolved.

Wont shift out from second gear

It is in "limp home mode." This happens when transmission errors occur, such as P-O700. You can try disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes, reconnecting it afterwards, and seeing if that clears the code and the problem. However, if it persists, the following may be informative: https://www.avengerforumz.com/threads/2008-avenger-p0700-p0760-stuck-in-1st-2nd.54831/

fail safe /limp mode..sounds like an automatic transmission

you should have third and reverse

I have an 08dodge avenger I fixed the limp mode problem and the car ran perfectly for about a week then all of a sudden it won't even crank can someone help please

There may be a connection between the Limp mode and no crank. If the battery is failing it may have been that a very low voltage crank triggered a limp home mode. The battery now a week later may have given up and is dead. Also check the battery terminal connections. Try jumping the car? If cranks take to auto parts store and have battery checked

Car stays in 2nd gear all of the time. (Limp mode) Fix Engine light stays on, D green light blinks constantly for automatic transmission Honda Accord 2005

Ah, I see. You want to outsmart the computer? Right logic, wrong computer. I think the problem is not in the transmission, but it is the engine computer that has communicated with the transmission computer and put the car in limp-in mode. The fix engine light is sent from the engine computer, and this is the main computer in the car, the main drive train computer, if you will.
The short answer is yes it will reset, by just unhooking the battery. Won't do any harm. Start it up about an hour later, and be sure and let it warm up to normal operating temperature (closed loop) before you take it out for a test drive. Otherwise you may be miles from home in 2nd gear limp-in mode again.
The real fix is to talk to your car...like communicate with the computer and get those trouble codes read...talk to it nice, not the abrupt tone of the glaring idiot light, and maybe it will respond in a kinder, gentler easy to fix diagnostic code!!!!
Good luck.

Amber gearbox light came on in my 2004 S type Jaguar. After shutting engine down and cooling it started with no light on. So, I limped home. The Q: Now that the light is no longer lit can I drive it? Or,...

you need to have the car scanned for freeze frame data code reading to see what happened at the time of the limp mode...Let me say that at times after heavy rain or even if you wet the fire wall near the throttle body, that can also cause the limp mode coupled with brake, dcs,and gear box fault and engine fault lights etc...You can actually do a hard reset yourself by disconnecting the neg battery terminal for 30 min..Let the car run and take it for a drive to make sure the shift points arent jerky. But have the car scanned and let me know what code comes up.

Transmission will shift properly and then it wont shift it stays on first i have disconnet and connect battery cables for it to shift

Sounds like you have a transmission problem.
The reason it's stuck in 1st or 2nd is the computer goes into "limp home mode" allowing you to get the vehicle to a service center to get it repaired.
By disconnecting the battery you reset the computer and your transmission works until it senses the problem again and goes into limp home mode again

2002 Impala: transmission limp mode...

Most transmissions have a limp mode, or limp-home mode.
If the driveline computer thinks there is something wrong, it can lock the transmission into one gear, such as 2nd gear. Usually reverse will also be available. The Impala automatic has 4 speeds. 2nd speed or gear will get you home, but the engine rpms can get a little high. I wouldn't get on the expressway will in limp mode.
Before taking to the shop, you might want to try and reset limp mode by turning the car off for a couple minutes, or you may have to disconnect and reconnect the battery.
