Why is 1998 sunfire 2.2 engine low coolant light on but system is full

Engine not running hot but low coolant light is on. Coolant system is full. Engine had blown head gasket, could this be the problem?

No ,your low coolant light sensor is in the overflow container . that light means nothing. from what you wrote your ok .

ok, its time for a radiator flush. there is major sludge in the internals of this radiator. Make sure the thermostat is in the correct position as well. I've seen many cars come into my shop with the thermostat inserted backwards.

SOURCE: Sunfire overheating, not low on coolant

Look at the main fuses.Alot of cars fans run off them.Its useally under the hood.Most of the times there on the right side above the finder well.

the worst case senareo, could have crack in head, worse yet cracked block. a friend of mine had a 95 olds same car as yours just different brand same engine got hot cracked the block. you can try a sealent, i never seen any that would seal a head gasget or crack block. myself i woodent mess with it, junk yard motor,theres a lot of them out there, most you can hear run before you buy. cars almost 15 years old, should be able to pick one up for around 350 to 400 bucks. you have that much in it if you tear it down and put it back together yourself. save yourself alot of trouble, not to mention money, and chg. engines. hope i helped. OLD SCHOOL.

CHECK YOUR RELAY IN YOUR FUSE BOX UNDER THE HOOD ON THE DRIVERS SIDE INNER FENDER. THE A/C AND THE HEATER RELAY ARE SAME. CHECK AND SEE IF THE A/C REALY WORKS BY TURNING ON YOUR A/C SWITCH. THE ELECTRIC FAN SHOULD START RIGHT AWAY. OTHERWISE YOU HAVE TO WAIT TILL THE ENGINE ACHEIVES OPERATING TEMP TO KICK THE FAN ON. IF ONE DON'T WORK AND OTHER OTHER DOES... SWITCH THE RELAY AND SEE IF IT WORKS. BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT. $9.00 FOR A NEW RELAY AT CHECKER AUTO PARTS.

low coolant sensors work by the fact that they need to be completely covered by water. There is current to the sender that earths out through the coolant to the engine and back to the battery earth wire.. This circuit hols a relay open so that no lights come on. When the circuit is broken ( low water --broken wire) the relay clicks in and the lights come on to let you know that there is no coolant in the system before there is damage done to the engine. So check that there is coolant. in the radiator right up to the cap ( not some in the radiator) and check that the wire is not broken at the sensor.. You may not have bled all the air out of the system (air lock) and this is affecting the sensor because there is not always water around it.

2000 Pontiac Sunfire GT 2.4L Low coolant light on, even with coolant reservoir full, car is overheating.
I think the first thing I would do is take the thermostat out and run the engine without it.
If the engine stops running hot, try a 180 degree instead of the 195.
As for the low coolant light, can you unplug the sensor and make the light go off ?

Heater dont get hot its not heater core what els can i check
If you have a coolant temperature gage in the instrument cluster and it is running cool replace the thermostat. If you have an "idiot light" for temperature make sure the engine is hot and check the top radiator hose to be sure its hot.

WHY IS MY 98 PONTIAC SUNFIRE OVER HEATING? HAS NEW RADIATOR COOLING FAN NO LEAKS IN COOLING SYSTEM.
A thermostat that does not open and close would cause these very symptoms. Since it does not allow coolant to flow through the system, it will make the engine overheat. Since it won't allow the "heated" coolant to pass by your fan, the heat will continually blow cold air.
Stop driving the car immediately, becuase the next step will be some blown gaskets - especially head gasket. Other possible reasons can be as follows:-- It could be just low on coolant. if it is then add coolant... with low coolant the water pump can not move enough coolant to supply hot coolant to the heating system . also if its low the motor will over heat fast..... If the system is full then you may have other problems.. such as 1) bad thermostat 2) bad radiator cap ( not holding pressure so it will leak coolant) 3) blown head gasket . 4) bad heater core (leaking coolant out.. check the floor board under the dash on the passenger side.) 5) bad hose or clamp. It is probably the same problem, you need to check the coolant level in the reservoir if it is full, then you need to check the coolant in the radiator. Make sure that you don't open it while it's hot, It will get you. You can also bring your car to advance auto or autozone, or most any other parts store and they will tell you why your check engine light is on, for free.

My 1998 sunfires temperature keeps getting hot where as i can hear it bubbling when i shut it off! the water pump was replaced but it is still doing it!!!
It sounds like you have air on your cooling system, recheck the coolant level at the radiator cap. "engine cold" Make sure the radiator is filled to the top and add if needed, place the radiator cap back on only at the first click and make sure the over flow tank is at the full level and start up the engine to warm it up with the heater on high heat. If you like you can go for a 10 min drive to ensure the thermostat has opened and all the coolant has cycled through out the engine and heater core. With the engine still running, close off the radiator cap to the second click and then turn off the engine, this should have worked the air out of the system. If not do it again and keep en eye on the over flow tank, top off if needed. Good luck and hope this helps.

Temperature/heat wont work/dashboard lights on and off
It sounds to me like you're low on coolant. When you checked the coolant level, did you actually open the radiator cap and make sure the radiator is full? The plastic tank you generally add coolant too is actually an 'overflow' or 'reserve' tank. There is a hose that runs from that tank to the top of the radiator so if the radiator gets low on coolant, more coolant -should- run in from the overflow tank. However in practice this does not always work. I have a Jeep that leaks coolant and experiences this exact same problem. Coolant will not run from the reserve tank into the radiator because the hose is plugged up, and whenever the radiator gets low on coolant the temp gauge will go real high and then drop, and the heater doesn't work well. This is because the cooling system of your car is supposed to be a closed system, full of coolant and no air. When coolant leaks out, the space it used to occupy is now occupied by air, which does not transfer heat well. When 'air' is passing through your cooling system, no heat can be transferred from your engine to the heater and radiator, resulting in a hot engine and no heat at the heater. Then when a pocket of water passes through the system, the temperature gauge quickly falls as the water absorbs the heat from the engine. The hot water that cools the engine is where the heater gets it's heat from as well, so when water passes through the heater core, the heater works, but when it's filled with air, it doesn't.

Low coolant light always on
Low coolant means just that, find out if the system is really low or the light is receiving a false signal from the low coolant sensor, just check the level in the coolant recovery tank and the make sure the radiator tank is full, if you are low on coolant then check out why, a leak is probable, most likely a water pump or hose related issue, and no a bad thermostat will not in itself turn on the low coolant light unless the engine boils over and the system becomes low. Remember never ever open a radiator cap on a hot engine, you would be surprised how many professional mechanics get burned this way, be careful..
