2000 mercury grand marquis 4.6 Intermittent problem. 35,000. miles. Problem engine died several times wile driving. Also after car is parked from a drive will not start. Found that the fuel pump is not turning on with the ignition key turned on after car was parked. Checked for fuel pressure ...no pressure. Suspect that fuel pump is not on when cart dies when driving. #1 1st Tested car when car was working good and problem was not there. .Fuel pump fuse good. Fuel pressure good 35psi Tested Fuel pump relay according to the "Chilton Manual 26180" According to the fuel system test... installed a jumper wire into the fuel pump relay terminals that power the fuel pump (per foto). Listed for fuel pump to turn on (it did) ..book says "if you now hear the whirring sound, the fuel pump relay or its control circuit is faulty." Switched PCM power relay, fuel pump relay and air conditioning relay . Drove car and started and stopped engine in driveway dozens of time to get it to fail. No failure. #2 Drove car. Started engine and stopped engine dozens of times in driveway and after some time starting engine and stopping engine got car to not start. Fuel pump not on....no sound. Fuel pressure gauge ...no pressure. Car wont start. Pulled fuel pump relay and installed a jumper wire into the fuel pump relay terminals that power the fuel pump according to book. This time fuel pump did not turn on. According to the book "If there is no whirring sound ,there is a problem in the fuel pump circuit from the relay panel to the fuel pump, defective power relay or a defective fuel pump". Replaced pulled fuel pump replay...turned key... fuel pump did not turn on. Turned key to try and start dozens of times and after lots of tries fuel pump now on ...pressure in fuel line ...car starts. Got any ideas? .

I'd have to test when problem is ongoing. When you first turn on key, no crank, you should hear the pump run for a few seconds then stop. For initial prime, the computer doesn't need rpm signal. Engine cranking, the computer needs to see rpm signal or it won't ground the fuel pump relay. W/o rpm signal, no spark at the plugs and no fuel injector pulse. I know your talking about fuel, but, when problem is ongoing, check spark and fuel injector pulse, engine cranking.
Intermittent problems are a pain, have to test when problem is ongoing.

you may need to run a wire from a keyed ignition source that has power while cranking and running to the fuel pump relay and bypass the pcm to test wether it will run, if it runs put a more permanent wire in place. Not too sure what tests youve done but it seems that fuel is what your focusing on so a quick test is too spray engine start up the intake tube to see if the engine trys to run if it does it eliminates a lot of other potential reasons for a no start condition. Also try squeezing the fuel return line to see if the added pressure will try to make engine run.Could be time to replace fuel pump etc anyway let me know how it goes good luck with it

You have a problem in the fuel pump relay circuit for sure then. I'm betting the relay, but it could be that dropping resistor.

SOURCE: Car stalled and won't start again

Sounds like it might be either the fuel filter or the fuel pump, cause if you ran the tank down, you probably had sludge in the bottom of the tank that you sucked into the engine, you can try using a fuel system cleaner, you may have sucked sludge into the injectors running it, Zmax sells a fuel system cleaner, or there is one called RUN RIGHT, I would try putting some of that in letting it sit a few min then after it sat a few to soak in and break down the sludge, then start the car up, kick your idle up to around 1500 RPM do not go higher then that cause you will damage the engine, try that and see if that works for you, if not then I is probably the fuel pump or filter.
hope this helps.

My 2000 Merc Gr Marquis has died 4 times while driving. I stop, put in park, it starts fine. Sometimes it will act like it is going to die again, but doesn't. Two mechanics haven't found anything.

It's a tough one to pinpoint. Do an upper intake cleaning and clean the idle air bypass valve. Also clean the mass air flow sensors carefully.
