There are really only 2 possibilities which are within your reach
- low trans fluid level, check that with engine idling
- poorly adjusted shift linkage, see p69 here

If anything else has failed, like a shift solenoid, it's really a job for a specialist.

a squirel or other small rodent type got in under your car and chewed right through your gas line and so your motor cranks but no fuel gets to it because its all leaking out of your knawed gas line, causing that gas smell. either that or an angry ex- got under your car and snipped them.... or it could be your fuel pump.

Try pushing the little square button above the power windows. That button locks all passenger windows.

only 2 bolts. They are hard to get to at the back of the engine but one is the mounting one and the other is the locking one for the adjuster once you get them lose you can undo the adjuster bolt and take tension off of belt then pull it off and replace it.
