Yes,the axle has to come out.Which means the rear end cover has to be removed.If your not familiar with this process you should not attempt it on your own or you could end up with bigger head aches.Hope this heaps.Good luck.

the connections near the front axle that activate the motor to engage the system aren't melted? That's a comon problem for that body style. If there good, sounds like it could be that motor itself. To figure out if it's you motor or transfercase, jack up the rear end, have a friend inside shift into 4 wheel drive, or try to, and put it in gear and apply some gas. If the front driveshaft is turning then it's something with the front end. If not, farther back in the system.

sounds like the wheel speed senser is not working properly when you are in all wheel drive the computer uses the brakes to keep the all wheels rolling at the same speed for good traction if one speed senser is reading that right side front wheel was going faster than the others it would activated that brake via the antilock brake system

Theres a vacume dash pot under the battery box. It pulls a cable that engages the front diff. Put the vacume line and you'll have lights and four wheel drive. (it happened to my blazzer)

You are Talking about the Main Cover on the Rear of the Rear end Correct???? If so, This is Just a Gasket and is Very easy to replace. The Gasket is Simply Worn out.

-Remove tire and brake drum
-put drain pan under axle housing
-remove rear axle housing cover (10 or 12 bolts)
-turn gear untiil the bolt for cross shaft shows and remov e the bolt
-remove the cross shaft.
-push axle in until you can remove "U" clip from axle and axle will pull out,
Remove seal, you need a pulller to remove axle brg.
