Pontiac g5 steering shaft u joints binding

Sounds like an intermediate shaft. The universal joint on the shaft is partially seized up and when turning it, it binds up in certain spots. Usually evidence of this is seen on the u-joint in the form of red rust dust but not always. To make sure disconnect the shaft at the steering rack and articulate the u joint and check for binding.

It's most likely your steering box but you want to have your front end checked for binding including the intermediate steering shaft joint. If all checks good and fluid in circulating then it's in the steering box

get some help, have someone help you locate where the sound is coming from. could be the intermediate shaft, rack, tie rods, ball joints.

either the steering shaft has broke or the rack and pinion is broke have someone turn the wheel and look under hood near where the steering shaft meets the rack and pinion. do you see it spinning? if so the rack is most likely broke inside. if not the steering shaft may have snapped. hope this helps

The front wheels of the vehicle must be maintained in the straight ahead position and the steering column must be in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft. Failure to follow these procedures will cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in damage to the SIR coil assembly. 1. Raise and support the vehicle. 2. Remove the stabilizer shaft. 3. Remove the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Caution: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury. the power steering reservoir on this car is on the passenger side, back of the motor, far down. you will see a small cap with a picture of a white steering wheel. keep looking, it's difficult to see but it is there!
as for the noise, my first suspicions would either be upper strut bearings, or possible a lower control arm bushing pulling out of place. failing those, could be a seizing tie rod end or ball joint. very unlikely, but not to be ruled out, is the intermediate steering shaft (what connects your steering wheel to the steering rack). a mechanic with a good knowledge in suspension diagnosis should be able to pick off your problem. if you wish to continue diagnosing yourself, a mechanics stethascope can be very useful to hear wear the steering linkage is binding. good luck!

There is no power steering fluid in the system.A 2005 Malibu is electronic steering.If you lose assist you may have to replace the steering column.You may also have an intermediate shaft that is binding.The I-shaft connects your steering column to the steering gear.There is a universal joint in the shaft that may be stiff or seized.

Go to Step 8 Go to Step 6 6 Check for a worn or binding steering gear. Is the steering worn or binding? Go to Step 9 System OK 7 Replace the outer tie rod end. i say lots of stabilisator links loose

Try some lube on your intermediate shaft (the shaft between the steering column coming through the firewall and the rack). There's a couple u-joints on it that are prone to binding up. Get some good lube, like tri-flow, and spray the heck out of it. Turn the wheel a few times and spray it again.
