P0301 Code - Cylinder #1 Misfire
A P0301 code means that
the the car's computer has detected that one of the engine's cylinders
is not firing properly. In this case it's cylinder #1.
Symptoms may include:
- the engine may be harder to start
- the engine may stumble / stumble, and/or hesitate, other symptoms may also be present.
A code P0301 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
- Faulty spark plug or wire
- Faulty coil (pack)
- Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
- Faulty fuel injector
- Burned exhaust valve
- Faulty catalytic converter(s)
- Running out of fuel
- Poor compression
- Defective computer
* This conditions is the same when code is P0302 or P0303.
Possible Solutions:
If there are no symptoms, the simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back.
If
there are symptoms such as the engine is stumbling or hesitating, check
all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark
plugs). Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the
car, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of your regular
maintenance schedule. I would suggest spark plugs, spark plug wires,
distributor cap, and rotor (if applicable). Otherwise, check the coils
(a.k.a. coil packs). In some cases, the catalytic converter has gone
bad. If you smell rotten eggs in the exhaust, your cat converter needs
to be replaced. I've also heard in other cases the problems were faulty
fuel injectors.
Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback

It could be carbon deposits on valve seats keeping valves from totally closing. You can try getting you a can of motorcraft PM3 top end engine cleaner and get engine up to operating temp then remove one of the small vacuum lines from the intake and draw the contents of the can slowly into the engine. After you have drawn in the contents shut engine off and let it soak for about 45 minutes then crank it back up and let it run until it clears. Now it will smoke like a forrest fire while you are doing this so don't be alarmed, just tell the neighbors you are spraying for mosqitos. This may cure the problem. If not you may be looking at a valve job.
This can be verified with a compression test if this is what is causing it.

Clear the computer. Either use a scanner or disconnect the NEG battery cable for 10 minutes. The old defect takes 25 to 35 startups to clear itself. Then there is the possibility that #5 is a different cylinder on that motor. The engine may be misfiring because of a bad injector on #5.

The coilpack could be bad, also check your alternator.

Probable coil due to age. It is a coil pack unit. Runs about 70.00 from parts store and not hard to change. Another possibility is the fuel injector, it's connector or wiring to it from PCM. Have a mechanic do a compression test on the cylinder to eliminate a mechanical issue i.e. burned or bent valve or piston rings bad.
Good luck!
