Oil Pressure Gauge

I recently had the oil gauge sending unit replaced on my 1998 LeSabre. It was leaking. With the new sending unit, the gauge barely moves above or below the center. Is it a faulty sending unit?

It's not uncommon for a new part to be defective. While the car is running it should be in the middle. If you have the ignition on without the motor running it should be at zero. If it isn't, you definitely have a problem. There is a solder joint that in the guage cluster that will losen up over time causing incorrect readings on the gauges. Also check out the wiring going to the sensor for frays. This can ground out the sensor giving inaccurate readings.

If the engine is not making loud valve train sounds or rod knocking sounds, consider changing the oil pressure sender.

The oil light on my 1998 Camry is on but I just got the oil changed

If it is the oil pressure warning light showing, the next thing to do is to remove the oil pressure sender unit and screw in a gauge to see if the sender is at fault.

After that it could be that the over-pressure relief valve in the oil pump has stuck open.

My 2005 Nissan Armada is reading oil pressure abnormally high. The gauge is maxed out.

  • Well it could be a bad oil pump or a bad Oil Sending Unit. If you have an oil pressure gauge you can pull the sending unit and stick the pressure gauge in there and see what the reading is. I would thing 60PSI would be suitable.
  • I believe this Oil Sending Unit is on the front (possibly the back) of the oil pan.
  • Just remove the connector and put a wrench (or a deep socket) and twist it out and replace with a new one.
  • Make sure the oil filter is snug and not leaking as well.
  • Check your oil level too and make sure it is properly filled.
  • Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

1995 buick lesabre limited, oil gauge issue

Could be two things, your oil pump pick tube is clog, oil pan would have to be drop to check, or your camshaft bearing worn causing low oil pressure,I would not say piston rod bearing or main bearing, cause there's no knock noise. You will have better oil pressure when cold due to oil much thicker. so I would forget about a bad oil pump.

What would cause a drop in oil pressure without any visible leak

the pressure bypass valve in the oil pump leaking by and not closing completely to make the pump build full pressure,or the pump is working and the sending unit is giving you a false reading, then you should have a mechanic put on a gauge to see actual pressure of the pump, don't wait cause if pressure is actually that low you will sustain engine damage soon

02 cherokee losing oil pressure when accelerating, fine at idle.

Was the sending unit an aftermarket part?We like to install the original part back into most vehicle, but because of people price shopping, this can cause some issues. If the switch is working properly, the gauge should rise as the engine RPM's increase as you stated. With the key on and the engine off, disconnect the sending unit wire and ground it. The gauge should go to the highest reading, and that checks the wire, and the gauge. I suspect that the sending unit is failed or not the proper one for your vehicle.

My 01 bonneville oil pressure gauge is showing 120 and my gas gauge is all over the place

HI, the oil pressure sending unit may be malfunctioning at this point. this will cause erratic readings. if your oil level is proper and there are no apparent oil leaks, you will need to replace the oil pressure sending unit. this will fix the erratic oil pressure readings.

Concerning the gas gauge. this device also has a sending unit that sends the correct fuel level reading to the gas gauge via wire transfer. this sending unit is located and attached to the fuel pump assembly inside the gas tank. replacing this device will fix this issue as well.

Please rate and god bless:)

Hook up a manifold gauge (mechanical temporary use gauge, used by mechanics) and test the oil pressure. You probably need to replace the gauge. The computer sends info through a printed circuit board behind gauge cluster and sometimes you have to replace the whole gauge cluster.
