If the cooling system has no bleeder valves to vent air, you may have to temporarily loosen a heater hose to get all the air out of the system...Also check to see if there is water in the oil...If there is water in the oil then it could have a head gasket problem..Did you ever replace the thermostat? If it is stuck then it would also cause overheating...Excessive exhaust backpressure because of a clogged catalytic converter could also cause overheating..Also check belt tension and condition. A loose belt that slips may prevent the water pump from circulating coolant fast enough and/or the fan from turning fast for proper cooling...Another thing it could be is a faulty Water pump -- Any wobble in the pump shaft or seepage would call for replacement. In some instances, a pump can cause an engine to overheat if the impeller vanes are badly eroded due to corrosion or if the impeller has come loose from the shaft. The wrong pump may also cause an engine to overheat. Some engines with serpentine drive belts require a special water pump that turns in the opposite direction of those used on the same engine with ordinary V-belts... Also check the Fan -- With mechanical fans, most overheating problems are caused by a faulty fan clutch, though a missing fan shroud can reduce the fan's cooling effectiveness by as much as 50% (depending on the fan's distance from the radiator) which may be enough to cause the engine to overheat in hot weather or when working hard.

SOURCE: 2001 Ford Windstar is leaking antifreeze

Could be water pump, radiator, freeze plugs, hoses, ect. try and isolate the area by putting a piece of card board down on the ground and line up what is above it. Garages use a pressure tester on the cooling system to see where the leak is. I would guess water pump,or small bypass hose

SOURCE: Have 2002 Ford Escape, Where's the Radiator Cap??

This is where you fluid goes. If I were you, I would stay away from those sealants. But yes you can put the sealant in the reserve, but it;s best if you drain half the water out, pour in coolant and then re-fill. This gives it a better chance to flow throughout the system. Sometimes these sealants can cause more harm than good in the long run.

SOURCE: Ford Escape 2003. Engine suddenly overheat.

Engine over heating can be caused by a number of things. When you say the water pump and radiator appear to be ok I am also guessing that you checked the coolant level to make sure it is normal.

If the level is low then you obviously have a leak. Insufficient coolant circulating will not cool the motor properly because it won't be able to draw enough heat out. If the level is normal then you need to check the thermostat to make sure it is opening properly. To do this, run the motor to temperature and check the top and bottom hoses. They should both be hot and firrm once the thermostat opens meaning the circulation loop is operating properly. If the top is hot and firm and the bottom is cold/soft or collapsed then the thermostat isn't opening.

If the thermostat is operating properly then you ned to look for some other obstruction or cause for coolant loss. Check the head/intake gaskets, hose connections, hoses, over flow tank, radiator fins, radiator side tanks etc..

Good luck.

More info please.

My Chrysler Concorde 2000 3.2? Overheated and melted a hole in the water resivour tank,so we replaced that, it still got hot fast, so we replaced thermostat, then it started making a loud noise it sounds...

The whistling noise is steam. The problem is you never attacked the source of the problem. What you need to do now is drain your radiator completely at opening T-spicket at the bottom of the radiator. While you drain with engine off, run your water hose on top, to flush out the radiator. Then run to the Auto store and buy "radiator flush" -- follow directions. After flushing out the radiator flush, close the T-spicket, and fill with NEW anti-freeze. By enough to fill to the very top. Mix the anti-freeze with water per instructions to your environmental weather.
Buy a new radiator cap which could have caused the problem in the first place by not allowing the correct pressure to blow off. Being a 2000 car is a little early for radiator problems, but an incorrect anti-freeze solution causes radiators to fail prematurely.. Better to have more than less because anti-freeze keeps the radiator from corroding.
Your radiator never cooled the water sufficiently, and boiled much of the water out, hence it got so hot that it would melt the water tank. The Thermostat could well have been the cause because it got corroded from the inept ant-freeze mixture. Did you find rust on the Thermostat ? If so it was the case. If not the radiator has lost cooling either by low water or the cores have become plugged up, in that case you will need a new radiator. See if the flush loosens the rust within the cores before buying an expensive radiator. Check the water hoses if leaking cooling. Run the car allow the engine to become hot before accepting that your water hoses are fine. Because heat expand everything, and may not leak until after the expansion.

I have a 2002 ford ranger that runs normal while engine is running but gets hot when i shut off engine

SOUND LIKE ENGINE OVERHEATING.USE A INFRA THERMOMETER ENGINE TEMPERATURE SHOULD NOT EXCEED 104 CELSIUS WHICH IS 220 DEGREES IF ENGINE EMPERATURE GOING OVER 230. THERMOSTAT STICKING PARTIALLY CLOSED,WATER PUMP FAILING CHECK WEEP HOLE IF LEAKING REPLACE WATER PUMP.FLUSH RADIATOR ,HEATER CORE, AND ENGINE BLOCK. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 50 / 50 ANTI FREEZE AND WATER.MAKE SURE ENGINE EXHAUST NOT STOPPED UP BECAUSE EXHAUST SYSTEM ALSO TAKE HEAT AWAY FROM ENGINE.

How can i tell if my waterpump is bad? shut the car off and came out later to anti freeze in the driveway

If it's leaking that bad, open the hood take off radiator cap and fill with water (without making a mess and spilling a bunch. Then simply watch for where the leak is at, if it's leaking from a hose, the radiator, or from around the area where the belt is located on the passenger side of the engine compartment. If it's leaking from the passenger side around the belt area your water pump is the most common cause. They are made so when the bearing wears out around the shaft the pulley bolts, it has what are called weep holes and the water just runs out to tell you to replace the water pump.

The car is leaking anti-freeze. The suggestions we received were, that it could be the water pump. Where is the water pump located, and can it be fix without taking it to a mechanic.

Could be water pump, bad hose, bad gasket. First thing is first, find out what the problem is. Go to auto part store, get some dye for radiator system. dump it in, run vechile, use uv goggles and a uv light to determin where it is leaking from. Once found, a step by step process can be described for you to replace needed parts.

How to dianose waterpump to find problem

Could be the water pump or the serpentine belt is slipping on the water pump pulley. Is the radiator coolant hot? If it is, the coolant is not circulating through the block and heater core. I am assuming you see and hear no leaks and you have installed the thermostat in the correct direction to match the coolant flow. You should be able to squeeze the radiator hose before the thermostat and feel it expand when you have the engine running. You might be able to splice a hose with a T connection and valve to see the flow. Otherwise you would have to take out the pump and check the impeller.

Same Problem:Runs hot comes out over flow no leaks

If the anti-freeze is coming out of the overflow you probably have serious problems. One it could be a blown head gasket or blown intake manifold gasket. I not sure what your abilities are as far as mechanical but there is a lot you have to do and have the tools to do it with. That would explain why you are running hot if you had either of these two problems.

Overheating, reserve coolant tank boiling I have a 2000 Ford Taurus with the similar problem. I had my water pump replaced then this started.

Ford 2000 Taurus

To solve the problem you have the things to do in this order;

) When the engine is cold top off the radiator with fluid. (When the pump was replaced the fluid should have been also)
) Make sure the radiator fluid has anti-freeze in it. This is also anti boil also !
) Add fluid to the overflow reservoir.
) Make sure the drive belt was replaced on the water pump.
) With the engine running, you can add fluid to the radiator for the first minute or so. You want to get air pockets out.
) Replace radiator cap.
) Let car warm up. When it's hot you should get the radiator fan coming on.
) When it get hotter the air-conditioning fan may come on.
) If the fan does not come on, the heat sensor is probably bad.
) If all fans come on, and it overheats, you may have a bad thermostat. Trace the upper radiator hose to where it connects to the engine. That's where it located.

Do not operate the engine when it overheats, You will damage the head gaskets and cause radiator fluid to leak into the cylinders.
If you smell radiator fluid in the exhaust fumes, it may already be leaking.
