Exact same problem on a 2l CDX 51 model with 65,000 miles. It only started about a month ago. Car was serviced and new idle control fitted, week later started revving at 1500-2000rpm and after about 10 mins the orange engine warning light comes on. Try the gasket between the carburettor or the vacuum pipes may be pitted or holed, sounds like its letting air in causing the engine to rev.

Feb 1, 2012 - My Car 58 S3, as of last night decided to start revving whilst on idle, I found a clip ... I can do or is it going to be a trip to audi for them to pull my pants down! ... Lots of members all over the UK have VCDS, have a look at the VCDS .....and as the engine warms up it'll auto-rev to 1000rpm every time i sit at idle.

Check for a vacuum leak. This can cause a higher than normal idle. It can also cause a surge since the idle air control tries to adjust the amount of air required to idle.
Faulty idle air control valve.After you replace it you will need to reset the computer by disconnecting the ground cable on the battery for 30 seconds then re-install it and start it up it should run fine.
It sounds like it may need more than just an adjustment, the mixture screw is on the side down reasonably low close to the base plate, there are lots of different carbs used but the idle screw is usually right by the linkage point.
Notorious for vacuum leaks from failed hoses/tubing/conectors.Some of these are very hard to see/access.Check for this and be sure fuel filter is fresh. Look at fuel pressure. Check MAF sensor for dirt that has bypassed air filter. Good luck! Rate me please.
