The message center constantly displays the "door ajar" message. On occasion, the guages on the instrument panel completely goes to the right of the guage before reflecting a true reading.
My 2003 exp-eb-5.4- had the door warning going off all the time, sometimes it seemed more rounding a corner to left. Sometimes I would see the lights on in the middle of the night. Sometimes my battery would be dead after setting a couple of days. Then I wondered if battery was causing the whole door ajar security thing. Switched battery and problem solved. Now 3 or 4 months later has started running crappy in OD, will cruise ok if holding throttle steady. Runs better by turning OD off or at higher RPMs.

I finally broke down and took my truck to the dealer. It took them two tries, but they finally figured it out. It turned out to be the wiring harnes for the shift lever. When it exits the steering column, it was being chafed, and eventually wore through a wire and was intermittently shorting. It would blow a fuse (don't remember which one - I think it was on the bottom row, third in from the right. 20A). It stopped the alternator from charging too. They replaced the shifter harness and the problem went away. I did get a ticket while my speedo was inop however.

LOL, dont add to the environmental mess just yet!
have you replaced the sending unit for the gauge? its located usually in the intake manifold somewhere, or on one of the cylinder heads.
If thats not the problem, you may have a wire grounding out behind the dash.
my best advice is to try an aftermarket monitoring gauge with fresh wiring to the sending unit or sensor to check for this problem... hope this helps!
SOURCE: where is the water temp sensor located on the
It's not the temp sensor you need, it's the temp sending unit you need.
The sending unit operates the gauge
The sensor activates the electric cooling fans.
If you have the 4.9 6 cyl. it's on the passenger side, in back of the engine, just below the end of the exhaust manifold, it has a one wire push on connection.
On the V8, it's next to, or just below the distributor, with just a one wire push on connection.

Probably the sensor. I think you can test by removing the wire to the sensor and shorting to ground (with the ignition on). I believe it will show HOT when the wire is grounded. Perhaps an auto parts store can test the sensor if you take it in, or just get a new one to try. I doubt they're very expensive.

Thats sounds like maybe two problems..Your gauges will proof by going to the right when you first turn the key on some vehicles..But if it does it while driving you probably have a short in the cluster or the wires going to it..The door ajar light is probably a door switch..
