Check all the basics; fluid level for both trans and antifreeze, make sure all gauges are working, etc....accordianman

John, this sounds like a valve hanging up in the valve body. The car shifts when the govenor pressure overcomes throttle valve pressure in this valve body.
What is the condition of the fluid? Is it at all dark or grey, does it smell burnt? It should be a nice light pink. If not, have the fluild and filter for the trans changed. This may take care of the problem.
If the oil is really burnt, you are at the end of the life of the clutches and you are looking at a complete trans rebuild. If the oil is ok, a trans shop should be able to take just the valve body down, clean it and eliminate the problem without overhauling the entire transmission
good luck

I had this problem with mine, I have the later model after yours but if you remove the interior cover, and carefully pull back the plastic, you`ll see the motor, if you loosen the three screws just enough so the you can remove the two screws that hold the motor to the winder mech (watch out for the two square nuts that can fall out once you remove the two screws), You`ll probably find that the carbon brushes inside have stuck in a position where they don`t touch the commutator. Clean them up and operate them a couple of times and you`ll probably find that it works, however, Mine is still sluggish meaning that the brushes will be getting hot due to the current and they may fail again. I`ve found out that the window lift cables have to be replaced because even with the motor removed, the glass is extremely hard to move up and down. I`ve lubricated it and everything I can think of but the motor still finds it hard to move. I hope yours runs OK. Ian

Check your EATX relay in the fusebox.
EATX = Electronic Automatic Transaxle
the relay is for power supply to TCM (tranny control module) - 4speed will only work in limp mode (park, reverse, neutral, and 2nd gear only) if TCM is off. The relay controls the solenoid with allows fluid flow into the transmission.
