On diesel version you have it under the driver seat.
Pull the driver seat close to the driver wheel and go behind the seat. You'll se two small metal "legs" the seat is resting on. Near those there are some metal clams and those have to be pressed down. If pressed well the seat will be released. And can be lifted up.
underneath you'll have the battery covered with a plastic part that can be easily lifted off.

Definately a likely cause. The brake lights are controlled by a switch that is located next to the brake pedal. When you push the brake pedal, the switch moves and turns on the lights. If your brake pedal is loose or the switch is not aligned just right, it could cause your brake lights to fail intermittently.

i would check all the fuses first. then make sure the connections are tight and free from corrosion where the wire plugs into the back windo heater
