I have a 1999 Z71 4x4. The shifter is on the floor to shift in and out of 4x4. I recently wnet through some water after the hurricane getting back home. The next day the 4x4 light would come on and it would stay in 4x4. I tried to shift it in and out of 4x4. The light would go out briefly and then come back on. I took the cover plate of the shifter on the floor and looked to see if any microswitches could have gotten wet that would be shorting out. It is just soild linkage. When shifting in and out, I could hear the solinoid on the transfer case acuating back into 4x4. I took the plug off and the light went out and would shift back into 4x4. I cleaned the plug and the connection on the transfer case with brake cleaner. Then blew them both out with air. Problem solved right? Wrong! the same problem came back!
Is it a bad solinoid? Or could it be something else. IE a short somewhere, Bad Computer, Etc... I don't want to start troubleshooting by replaceing components yet. That can get expensive, especially when start replacing components that aren't bad. Can amyone help?

I had the same problem and it ended up being short in the front axles where the actuator at or the switch on the transfer case under body where the shift lever at

At the risk of going to the offensive, sometimes it's the simplest thing - you ARE putting it in neutral, at a stop, engine running, with the brake pedal pressed, when trying to shift out of 4wd, yes?
2) Check for blown fuse for 4x4 shift module
3)This sounds dumm, but worked on my wife 99. I took it to a school parking lot, put it in reverse, floored it and pulled on the lever and it popped out of 4x4
The cable might be worn and frayed when the cable gets near the park position. You might need to replace the cable or check the linkage on the transmission.
Motor and trans mounts worn or the body mounts worn letting it flex and nock it out of of Gear,,,if the truck is lifted/ or not you will need to in large the hole where the transfer case shifter comes the the floor,,,
It seems to be stuck in 4x4 still. There could be damaged done to the powertrain by the towing company. Therefore they should be held accountable for the damage and repair that will be needed. You never tow a vehicle in 4x4 it should be carried on a flat-back. Same with AWD vehicles. The towing companies are well aware of this, is their business to know. Make sure to disengage the 4x4, put the 4x4 shifter on the floor in neutral while in park or not moving. If you continue to have problems contact the towing company and hold them accountable for it. See what you can work out with them. If they tell you they are not responsible then contact a lawyer and make them responsible for it.
Hi ..i had the same same problem in my k3500,check 4x4 fuse first .if thats blown replace it if blows when you put in 4x4 go under the car and unplug the actuator at the front diff.go back in the cab and put another fuse in, shift into 4x4 if the fuse does not blow this time you will need a new actuator.
thats what happened with mine and now 4x4 is sweet.i thought mine worked to at the start until i got bogged and noticed my front wheels wernt turning.
I take it you have the manual t-case shifter on the floor. If so check all your linkages from the shifter to the t-case, if all appears well, simply disconnect the linkage from the t-case and see if it moves if it does your problem is in the shift mechanism in the t-case. if it still wont move even while disconnected clean and lube the linkage. If this still doesn't do the trick. replace your linkage
