I have just replaced the rear wheel bearing on my ford escort 1600 cc on a 97 plate and on putting it all together again i checked the haynes manual and it said that i should tighten it up to 192 lbs per foot and around 230 neutons and it seems really high and i dont want to cause to much damage to my car
i have a n reg si escort and had to replace the bearings i have put it all back together and the hub actually wobbles and i have tightened it up to spec, but when you drive it the back end twitches. i have tried everything i know and i am really thinking of scrapping car if cant fix it. any ideas

The auto adjuster needs to be released! It should be a knurled nut or notched nut, turn it a bit to close the shoes! When you press the brake pedal after fitting hub and wheels they will automatically reset!
Buy a Haynes manual for $15 for starters. Remember that coolant systems also have tranny cooling functions too. They needed to install them because the trans are getting cheaper and cheaper (this ain't the old days) and keeping the fluid cool is important. I've worked on a 97-98, but they aren't that far apart despite the P-engine vs. DOHC. You might even have the ever present Check the Haynes (or Mitchell or AllData - the Ford Dealer will probably print you a page or two for free on this so you can see how things are looped) - and you can get things put back together. You didn't say auto or 5 speed, but I suggest you check out the MANY devoted forums to Escorts and Ford Focus. Your answers likely lay there as well.
You can defeat the wheel lock by removing the lock plate and replacing it with a small washer of similar thickness. If you have an airbag, it must be disabled to do this...get a manual, follow instructions for directional switch replacement till you get to the lock plate, then reverse order to put it back together. (you will need these instructions to do the lock later as well)
hi take wheel off let hand breake off if theres an adjuster on back loosen it (not sure if it has 1) remove centre cap undo nut remove bearing remove hub might be screw in hub job done
check to be sure emergency brake is not engaged ..and that cable is not frozen/rusted keeping it from releasing at baking plate into back of drum..often there is a knock out...(dimpled.stamped impression in backing plate) where the adjusting hole should be..you would need to slam that out (or in) with a heavy drift or screwdriver you are willing to hurt..then get to the star adjuster adn back it off use lubricant around drum/backing plate area and at center (hub/drum) area where rust happens and pry with large screwdrivers 180 degrees apart between backing plate and drum wiggling and shifting positions around circumference...also a trick..open zerk fitting at that wheel cylinder and wiggle screwdrivers 'tween backing plate and drum to get shoes to close some....good luck
When you install the bearing are you replacing the complete hub? The torque spec for this is 130-174 ft.lbs. Also are the rims and tires of stock size?
