Hi i have a 1985 bmw 535i and i cant seem to get my brakelights to work. I put a new fuse in, check the brake switch and the bulbs are fine. a friend told me it might be the ground wire but i dont know where to locate it.

You need to take a look at the light sockets in the trunk area.there are NO wires going to the lights like most cars of the time.if you take a close look,you will see that the whole panel where the lights plug in IS the wiring complete with ground.you juat need to unplug each one and scratch all the corrosion off the fixed panel AND the flat prong like connections on the bulb sockets themselves.
every 5 series i have gotten into after being parked for awile had this problem.absolutely no rear lights.and yes,check out the fuse box,but it is most likely this or-
the brake pedal on these cars has a thin plate which the brake light switch/andclutch switch is bolted to.i have also seen in many cases the pedal travelbeing too excessive causing the thin plate to bend slightly causing it not to make contact with the switch,which also won't make the brake light warning lamp come on.but i bet you its those sockets in the trunk.cause if the hot side of one is grounding out-then none of them will work!good luck.
Usually, this is indicative of the wires being broken (or corroded) between point a and b. On my 735 (same year), I have a running light in the rear that won't turn on. We've traced it to either a grounding problem or a broken wire. You've really only got two choices: trace the wiring from point a to b and try and ohm it out to see if there is an open or run a new wire.

disconnect turn signal switch wires @ column, put power to wires to brake lights. that cks wiring to lights. next put power to wires through turn signal to ck switch. Power runs from brake light switch to turnsignal switch, to lights.
there won't be a seperate fuse for this light so check the rear lights fuse but i would epect it to be the bulb or a loose wire , check owners manual for the fuse locations
suspect a bad brake light switch,on the brake pedal itself.the key need not be on when checking the brake light switch.but requires 2 people.one to insure the brake lights come on,one to push the brake. theres a switch on the brake pedal itself. look above the brake pedal pad that you push to apply the brakes. you will see a plunger that moves in and out,just to supply the current to the brakelights.if the plungers out of sync,it will not work. or it may only be stuck.or simply bad,if it moves and brake lights do not work. if the plunger works on visual inspection,and is plugged up,the switch is suspect to be bad. thank you,for choosing fixya.com!! SIMPLE SOLUTION,CHECK THE BRAKE LIGHT FUSE. IT MAY ONLY BE BLOWN. UNDER THE DASH ON DRIVERS SIDE CLOSEST TO YOUR LEFT FOOT WHEN APPLYING BRAKES. WITH FLASHLIGHT,CHECK FOR BLOWN BRAKE LIGHT FUSE. if this fails,check for blown brakelight bulbs. unlikely that both brake light bulbs blown at once! but not unusall. thank you for choosing fixya.com!!
You should check the following
1) adjustment of the switch, it might just be the pedal is not allowing it to make the circuit
2) the fuse
3)bulbs
If you bridge to +ve and ground wires going to the switch the lights should come on. If they dont then theres an issue with the bulb or the fuse
the bmw lights passes through a module called the check control module. it is responsible for giving a warning if the bulbs are busted. it must be the module
change brake light switch . check brake switch wiring . for shorting then check tail light bulbs sockets. if you cant find it. you probably going have to buy a short finder.
check for loose ground or corroded/rusted ground points;
double check the ground connection of the stereo;
double check the battery's - terminal connection to engine and to chassis body;
check/clean relay sockets normally located with the main fuses.
in some worst case scenario and considering the age of the vehicle, a rehabilitation of the wiring system might be in order.
